The Club That Makes Fitness Social

There’s a club with a primary focus of helping adults of all ages to get fit, stay fit, and age gracefully. With both fitness, friendly competition, and companionship at its center, many swear by this club as their favorite place to spend time. It's for adult swimmers of all ability levels, and it can turn fitness into a regular social event. Interested in getting involved? Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

US Masters Swimming is a non-profit club with members all across the country. Available programs and resources vary by area, but workouts, events and copies of their publication, SWIMMER magazine, are accessible to all members. Members are medically insured while they’re at the pool, so there's protection there if needed. And best of all, US Masters turns swimming into a social event where you can make new friends and blow off some steam.

U.S. Masters Swimming: The Basics

US Masters Swimming (USMS) is a non-profit fitness club that’s open to all United States residents over eighteen. It offers workouts, competitive swimming programs and related events, and members are always insured while they’re at the pool. Other resources include a subscription to their magazine, SWIMMER, access to online resources and swimming lessons for adults looking to strengthen their skills.

And it's not just for solo-swimmers and workouts as even triathletes join USMS because the club caters to swimmers of all levels and all goals. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a competitive athlete, or whether you’re 18 or 80; USMS has something for everyone who loves to swim. And you don’t have to be in shape to get started. USMS certifies its own coaches, so help with reaching your fitness goals is always available.

Why Join?

USMS is more than just classes and insurance; it’s a social group. The Masters, as it's often called, allows swimming enthusiasts a way to meet up, get active and improve their health by doing it together. Get your feet wet with an introductory class, or get more competitive with a rigorous workout; either way, you’re interacting with other people who have fitness goals that are similar to your own. Have fun and make new friends while you hang out in the water and get in shape.

How to Get Involved

Joining is as easy as filling out USMS’s online sign-up form and paying a $45 registration fee. Or, you might decide to check out your local clubs first and see if they’re right for you before you make your decision, but rest assured, you'll be welcomed there.

No programs in your area? See what you can do to get one started. Contact membership@usmastersswimming.org or call 941-256-8767 (SWIM) if you need any help or have more questions.

What to Expect

USMS practices vary depending on skill level, so you can push yourself as little or as hard as you want. But many local pools have dedicated lanes and hours just for Master's clubs, so there is a distinct advantage to joining. Remember, you’re there to have fun! Practices and events also vary by club, but they’re all open to new members. Expect to get a good workout, but also to laugh and splash around with other adults looking to get or stay in shape.

You’ll also have access to knowledgeable coaches, who can help you improve your form or even learn to swim on a competitive level. If you decide you enjoy competing, you’ll have the opportunity to swim against other USMS swimmers in their national championships. Not into competing? Check out their yearly events instead.

USMS is a great opportunity for adults of all ages to get out there, get moving and get social. This may sound like a sales page but we were the ones who were sold when we learned about the fantastic benefits of this group and we couldn't wait to share it with you. What are you waiting for?
