Aging is a universal human experience. The human face is a three-dimensional object. Aging of the face and neck involves changes in all three-dimensions. An uncomplicated way of appreciating the changes that occur on the face as we grow older is to understand the "Three D's" of the aging face. The three D's include: Descent, Deflation and Deterioration.
The process of aging involves both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors include personal characteristics and genetic makeup. Extrinsic factors of aging include sun damage, smoking and lifestyle practices. The result of these components of aging includes the Descent (falling) of skin and fat, Deflation (sinking, loss of fat volume) and Deterioration (worsening quality) of the skin.
The total facial rejuvenation experience involves taking into consideration all three of these components of aging and performing the necessary treatments and procedures to correct the facial concerns.
The Descent aspect of the aging face is typically treated with lifting procedures such as a Face and Neck lift for drooping jowls and neck laxity, or an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) for hanging eyelids. Deflation of the face is treated with volume restoration. Adding volume to the face is accomplished most commonly by using dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Radiesse or Artefill. Your own fat is also an excellent choice for facial volume enhancement when a significant amount of volume restoration is needed or desired. Deterioration of skin is initially treated with a good home skin care regimen. Prescription strength topical products such as Retin-A and Hydroquinone will help repair damaged skin as well as prepare your skin for more aggressive procedures such as chemical peels and laser resurfacing. Botox will remarkably improve lines and wrinkles around your eyes and on the forehead.
For a more natural and balanced facial appearance, it is important to consider correcting all three D's of the aging face.
