Gluten Free?

At my local health food store I see "Gluten Free" written on quite a few products, how does on know if they have a reaction to gluten and should be on a gluten free diet?

Does anyone know what the signs are? What should I look out for?

My most recent adventure in life is to run a half marathon, I ran one a few years ago and for some crazy reason I’ve decided to do it again. Sensitivity to gluten is a condition known as celiac sprue. It is more than an allergic reaction and can even result in death as the person becomes unable to absorb any nutrients at all and starvation occurs in the later stages. There is lots of info on the net and in books on celiac sprue. The condition is progressive and often goes undiagnosed for years because the symptoms can be vague and mimic or become other conditions including auto-immune disorders. There is a test for gluten sensitivity that will tell you if you have celiac sprue. You must go through an md or similar to get the test. Anyone with a diagnosed autoimmune condition should be tested for celiac. Also be tested if family members have been diagnosed with auto-immune disorders as celiac is genetic. You can also be allergic or sensitive to wheat in general, not necessarily the gluten. If you are quite sure you don't have celiac, then the best determination of whether or not wheat is good for you is to eliminate it completely from your diet for 10 days and then add wheat back. If you feel fine, then no problem. If you notice a reaction, then that is your clue that wheat is not good for you.
