Putting It Into Action

This week I set some new goals for myself. Yeah, yeah, I know. It's not the first time and it won't be the last but I think I might have caught onto something recently that I didn't quite get before. I honestly think I was missing the action. No, I don't mean sitting at home when everyone else was out at the best Halloween party of the century. I mean truly acting on what it takes to reach those goals I set for myself.

If you know me, then you know Hit and Miss are two of my favorite people. There are a lot of things going on in my daily life and I am definitely a doer. Here I am, plugging away morning, noon and night to keep everything afloat and moving forward yet things just never seem to come together. It seemed like there was this invisible force at work throwing kinks in everything. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but you know how that feels! You want just one thing to turn out the way you hope, you do what is in your power to make it so and not only does it go kaput, but about a zillion more things come toppling down on your head like apples to the grocery store floor.

So, I had this A-HA moment. At least for me, it was an epiphany. Thinking on my day and what I could have done to make my life a little easier, it dawned on me. I go and go and sometimes I don't really stop and think if what I am doing is actually getting me anywhere. I spend a whole lot of time reacting. And if I am spending that much time reacting, then how much time am I really spending acting on what I need or want.

Case in point: every morning when we're getting ready for our day, the kids yell at me from their rooms that they don't have any socks. "Are you sure," I say. "See if you have a few runaways in there to make a pair out of." Guess what? NOPE! Not a sock one. So, every morning (and I SWEAR to you this is EVERY morning) I go digging for socks in one of the laundry baskets full of clothes that I haven't put away yet.

THAT my friends, is a reaction. Instead of making those little monkey kids of mine get in the laundry, fish out their socks and put the pairs away where they can find them (ACTION), I go fishing myself every morning for at least ten minutes (REACTION). That's a whole lot of ME time folks! That's at least 50 calories on the treadmill and that's a little closer to my goal of losing weight. See where I am going with this?

It's a microcosm, yes, but still a great example of how I have been missing the mark on hitting my goals. Finally, I have gained some perspective! So, back to my original statement, I have set some new goals for myself with the understanding that I have to take the steps necessary to get there. I am going to create a mind map with all the destination points along the way showing me what actions I need to take so I am consistently visualize moving along that path.

Organization is first on my list of priorities, so tonight the girls are going help me help them by getting their clothes sorted. It one small step for me, one giant LEAP for womankind. Ok, that's pushing it. It's a giant leap for me!

Now, you may be the most organized organism there is and you still might not be reaching your goals. It's different for everyone. After all, we are unique beings. I found out what part of the action I was missing and I bet if you think about it, you'll figure out what you are missing, too. My bet is that the right kind of action has something to do with it! ;)
