by Lisa Brookes Kift, MFT As a couple's therapist, I've seen a myriad of relationships styles. People who come in for counseling are clearly looking to change something they see problematic in their partnership. The problems range from the relatively benign tweaks in communication to serious pain and trust violations due to infidelity and all sorts of issues in between. Filtering through all of this, I've identified ten characteristics... 3/4/2008 8:00:00 AM
by Beth Rosenshein Testosterone is often referred to as a male hormone and that has always puzzled me. Since I started researching ovarian function it has always been quite clear to me that testosterone is a human hormone. It is produced by the gonads (ovary and testis) of women and men. After the gonads produce testosterone a small portion is converted to estradiol (the main estrogen of the ovary and the testis) and... 3/2/2008 10:23:55 PM
by Lisa Brookes Kift, MFT Most simply stated, empathy is the ability to put oneself in another's shoes - and also the willingness to respond to the person's needs. I believe it's one of the most important components of a happy, healthy relationship. Lack of empathy is a very common problem with couples. Many people never learned how to be empathetic from their primary caregivers or weren't modeled empathy by other important... 3/2/2008 8:00:00 AM

by Lisa Brookes Kift, MFT If there's one thing that we all seek - it's happiness. I've never met a person who has told me they didn't want to be happy, have you? When I do individual therapy, I have the opportunity to sit down with people as they present their concerns to me - whatever they may be. They usually seek therapy because they're experiencing some level of emotional distress - and are fundamentally unhappy. I've noticed... 2/27/2008 8:00:00 AM
by Lisa Brookes Kift, MFT In this fast-paced, dog-eat-dog world we live in, super-achievers often find themselves at the top of the heap in their professions. They're the ones who eat, breathe and sleep their jobs, race out of the house, briefcase and PDA in hand, occasionally a quick kiss to the spouse and kid on the way out. They're laser focused; often appearing completely in control and on top of the world. Whether it's... 2/27/2008 8:00:00 AM
by Nina Atwood, M.Ed., LPC In a recent Time Magazine article, the report from decades of research is that marriage helps both men and women live longer and healthier. But if you read the full story, you find that for women the caveat is this: the marriage must be good for her in order for her to experience the health benefits. The biggest factor? How much your relationship causes your brain to trigger the release of the stress... 2/22/2008 7:12:09 AM

by Lisa Druxman I am just recuperating from 2 weeks of nasty cold and sinus infection. Yuck! I can't tell you how much it slowed me down. And if you know moms (especially moms who work), we can't afford to slow down. But it occurred to me that maybe just maybe my body is smarter than I am. Just for a couple of weeks, I didn't workout (often) and I didn't wake up at 5:00 a.m. and work late every night like I usually... 2/20/2008 8:00:00 AM
by Brian J. Johnston Here are answers to the questions submitted from my original post: Lift Some Weight in 2008 Hi KathyK, Before I could make ANY recommendations we would need to discuss your past/present health history, including but not limited to: cardiovascular health, orthopedic limitations, past/present injuries, etc. It's ABSOLUTELY possible to achieve your desired goal over the next 4 weeks! It's really quite... 2/18/2008 1:16:50 PM
