Three Key Steps to Regain Momentum When You've Skewed Off-Course

If you are reading this article you have probably found yourself at one time or another at a crossroads in your life where you have skewed off-course and couldn't quite regain momentum. I can personally recall a particular time in my life when I skewed so far off-course that I forgot my initial vision and what it meant to me. I imagine that some of you can resonate with this, whether it be a weight loss goal, a career pivot, a new parenting journey, or even a search for a meaningful relationship. No matter what the goal and vision, the key steps you take in order to attain them should always be the same lest you lose momentum when the first unexpected life situation happens and you skew off-course as you watch your once-admirable pace slow down or worse yet, come to a complete halt. If this sounds familiar read on to learn the three key steps to regain momentum.

Three Key Steps to Regain Momentum

  1. Write it down. Take an index card (and yes, you may need to buy paper or index cards) and literally write down your goal or vision. Your goal or vision can be written in one simple 3-5 word sentence. Being clear and precise with your goal is key. If it's a weight loss goal, then write the weight you intend to be or the number of pounds you intend to lose.
  2. Put a date on it! Putting a date next to your written goal and vision is key. You can always adjust the date as you journey toward attaining your goal, however, you need to have a date written down in order to get there. When there is no date on it, it is just a passing dream. Conversely, imagine how exciting it will be to achieve your written goal and perhaps even ahead of schedule?
  3. Know your why! Knowing why you want it and what meaning it has to you is key. This is how you will stay laser focussed and on point so that when a life situation arises it won't throw you way off-course. You will look at your written goal, the written date, and your personal written reason every day without fail. I suggest making a few of these index cards and placing them in three areas at home and at work that you frequent often so that these reminders are visual throughout the day.

This sounds simple and it can be, however, when unexpected life situations drop down from the sky unannounced we tend to get caught up in all of the minutiae and forget the course we were on, our destination time-line, and how important it is to us!

Know that you are the very force in life that puts your life in motion. No one else is responsible for your successes and failures except for you. An unexpected life situation does not necessarily need to sidetrack you to the extent that you come to a complete halt. Honor the situation or experience and move on. Stay in the moment and keep momentum. Stay on task, and keep your life in motion by repeating the three key steps until each goal and vision is realized. You can do it even if you have skewed off-course. You have the power to go beyond any life situation and regain momentum and realize your goal and vision! No matter what, love yourself and shine it on others. It is why we are here.
