The Top 4 Cancers That Affect Women

While both men and women can experience cancer of many varieties, it is said that on average, 1 in every 3 women will develop some form of the disease in their lifetime. It is important for all ladies to know what kinds of cancer they are especially at risk for, so that they may spot the signs if any arise in the future.

Breast Cancer

While breast cancer can affect men as well, it typically occurs in women. The disease forms within the cells in the breasts, often causing pain, swelling, and unsightly lumps to form. You may notice bruising or other discoloration, or feel a lump growing under the skin. A mammogram monitors for this type of cancer, and if you have symptoms, it is best to get screened as soon as possible.

Endometrial Cancer

Endometrial cancer occurs in the lining of the uterus. Any abnormal vaginal bleeding you experience should get reported to your doctor immediately, as that is a common sign of not only this cancer, but many other gynecological issues. It is best to rule out more serious problems than to just chalk it up to hormones. You may also have unexplained pelvic pain or pain during sex. This form is known to many as uterine cancer, although it occurs in the endometrium.

Cervical Cancer

A tumor can grow directly on the cervix. A simple pap test can help reveal this type of cancer since it is located on the lowermost part of the uterus. Pain during intercourse may be one of your first signs, or you could have unexplained bleeding. Either way, it is important to see your doctor right away to have a diagnostic test and then have the tumor removed. Regular screenings for cervical cancer are recommended by most health care providers. Caught early, it is very treatable.

Ovarian Cancer

Cancer can develop on the ovaries. There are usually no symptoms in the early stages, making this cancer difficult to catch and stop before it does lasting damage. If you have pain in the abdomen, a loss of appetite, nausea, or have experienced unexplained weight loss, these could be advanced signs of a spreading disease. Since these are common symptoms of many different conditions or illnesses, it is best to see a doctor if you’re concerned.

These may be the 4 main types of cancer that affect women, but they are not the only dangers out there. Always be aware of signs and symptoms within and on your body that were never there before. Listen to your body and if you have concerns, see your physician. Catching the cancer early is one of the best ways to help cure the disease, or at the very least, stop it from spreading and start on treatment to heal.
