FORMALDEHYDE – Yes, the same substance used for embalming dead bodies is also used in most nail polishes, mascaras and some other beauty products. Since 2012, the FDA does not allow this chemical in hair straightening products…a step in the right direction. Since, however, the U.S. National Toxicology Program labeled formaldehyde a known human carcinogen, should it be used at all? Some individuals experience nausea, difficulty breathing, coughing, rashes and other distressing symptoms from contact with formaldehyde even at very low levels.

There are safer, formaldehyde-free options, such as SpaRitual and Zoya nail polish brands and natural mascaras from Tarte and Josie Moran.
