What Should I Wear For My Chair Massage

When someone is getting a chair massage for the first time, one of the most commonly asked questions is, "What do I wear for a chair massage?"  A closely related variation is, "Do I have to disrobe chair massage?"  These questions are normal, and perfectly reasonable to ask.

In the same way that you don't want to be the only one to show up to a Halloween party in a costume, you don't want to show up to work on the day of the massage dressed in something which could subject you to ridicule, right?  Here are a few guidelines to help you pick the perfect outfit for work on the day of your chair massage:

Wear comfortable clothes to work for your chair massage.  Make sure the clothes you are wearing allow you to move your arms and legs freely through their normal, full range of motion.  The therapist will be likely to work your arms through different positions, and you want your clothes to allow for the freedom of this movement.  Also, you will be bending your legs at the knees and hips to sit in the chair, so make sure you will be comfortable bending forward slightly as you are seated.

Keep the jewelry to a minimum.  If you like to wear jewelry to work, that's fine, but it is best for the massage to remove as much jewelry as possible.  This is simply for the sake of your comfort, and to allow the therapist to work freely in the areas of your arms, shoulders, neck, and head.

Leave the jacket at your desk.  If it really ties your outfit together, then you can wear it to the massage, then hand it to the therapist to drape over a table or chair during the session.  Jackets and sweaters do tend to inhibit some of the massage techniques, so be prepared by wearing a comfortable top underneath.

Thinner is better.  Certain techniques, such as friction, work best on a thin shirt material.  The thinner the material, the more the therapist will be able to feel with their hands, and pinpoint certain trouble spots to focus on for you.  Linen and Silk are fine.

The therapist cleans their hands between each session, so as long it is ok for your clothes to be touched by human hands, it is fine to wear it during the massage.  Oils and lotions are strictly optional, so let your therapist know if you have concerns about any material you are wearing being exposed to them.

Yes, you can wear a skirt, if you want to. Though comfortable pants are more ideal, your skirt should be just fine to wear if the hem comes to within 6 inches of your knees when you are standing, and you can comfortably stand with your feet shoulder width apart.  This will give you the freedom of movement you need to get in the proper seated position, and the skirt length will maintain your sense of privacy and comfort.

Take a break from work and get a chair massage. You and your body won't regret it.
