Fussing Over Fats

My last newsletter included a list of facts about cholesterol. I've been receiving a flurry of comments ever since. Beth E. sent me a link to Dr David Diamond's "The Truth Revealed" http://preservion.com/the_truth_revealed.htm. Generally I agree with Dr Diamond's comments. Our medical community has been living with blinders re saturated fat. Saturated fat is relatively neutral. Polyunsaturated fats have the best results for reducing heart disease risk, but by themselves are thought to increase cancer risk / need to be balanced with an antioxidant rich diet... which explains the push for the shift to monounsaturated fats The "evil fat" is the manmade one -- trans fat... which also occurs naturally in ruminant animals like cows. Trading saturated fat for carb, which is what our nation has done, is not good unless it's those carbs have a balanced distribution of low glycemic index. High fructose corn syrup is not evil it's just another sugar, and our high sugar intake - hidden in all sorts of foods contributes to our poor health. In fussing over fats we tend to forget to look at the balance. We still eat too much.

All the science confirms that lifestyle is more effective than drugs when it comes to reducing cholesterol and preventing diabetes. My father died at age 62 due to heart disease, roughly around the same time I discovered my own cholesterol levels were through the roof, despite staying at a normal weight. The rest of the family has diabetes. I've been controlling my cholesterol and risk for prediabetes for over two decades. One of the reasons my clients have great results is that I follow my own lifestyle advice. It's not difficult. It tastes good and feels good. People comment on how I don't look my age and marvel at my energy. It's not magic. It's all from simply matching a healthy lifestyle to genetic needs.
