TMJ, TMD, TMJD Etc. what are they about?

TMJ stands for Temporo-Mandibular Joint. We all have one TMJ on each side. A group of disorders associated with TMJ and its adjacent structures are collectively called TMD or Temporo-Mandibular Disorders. Treatment of TMD requires knowledge and training. Most dental insurances do not cover any treatment associated with TMJs. Night guard is meant to protect your teeth, when you grind. It has little to do with TMD.
TMD includes a "wide" range of pathological changes. Many people misuse this term and say, " i have TMJ." not knowing that everyone has TMJ. Even if you mean you have TMD, it is important to identify the exact type of pathology before you make a remedy for it. So next time you see your dentist, don't ask , " do I have TMJ?". Instead, ask, "why do I have TMD and what do you recommend to address that issue?"
