My name is Dr. Arthur Plesa. I am a board certified Chiropractic Physician in the state of North Carolina. I specialize in providing Upper Cervical Chiropractic Healthcare and my clinic is one of the few to do so in the Charlotte area. Since most people have an understanding of general Chiropractic, I would like to educate everyone on Upper Cervical Chiropractic.
Upper Cervical Chiropractic is the science of natural health restoration. What makes this type of Chiropractic so unique is that it is not another treatment for symptom control. Upper Cervical Chiropractic focuses on correcting the cause of disease and pain in the body. This specialized approach allows for those with chronic health problems and pain the ability to restore the body's natural ability to heal itself.
Let's understand how your body works in order to understand how Upper Cervical Chiropractic helps it to actually restore the natural healing ability from within. Life begins in the brain. It is created in the form of electrical energy. This energy travels from the brain and out to every tissue of the body using the spinal nerve system. The brain can be compared to a power generator that creates electricity to power the body. The brain uses nerves, which travel from the brain up above, to the body down below, in order to transmit this electrical energy.
Surrounding the spinal nerve system is the spinal column. It consists of 24 spinal bones, called vertebrae. Out of the 24 spinal bones, the two vertebrae at the top of the spine (upper cervical area) are considered the most vital in the protection of the spinal nerve system. Out of all the 24 spinal bones, the top two do not have a protective cartilage disc to secure it into place with the rest of the spine. As a matter of fact, the top two spinal bones are only held in place by a few muscles and ligaments. This leaves the upper spine susceptible to a serious condition called "subluxation".
A subluxation is a misaligned spinal bone in the upper spine which will decrease the opening in the spinal canal and cause interference to the transmission of electrical energy from the brain. All nerves that connect the brain to the body travel through the upper spinal area, where the head meets with the neck. So depending on how the upper spine misaligned, will determine which specific nerves become affected and which part of the body will begin to grow disease.
Subluxation is caused by an external force that overcomes the body's internal resistance. In essence, it is a sudden impact that you weren't prepared to brace yourself for. This can range from a quick, little slip on the sidewalk to a car accident. What is important to note is that it doesn't always cause pain and other noticeable symptoms when you have a subluxation (upper spine misalignment).
Upper Cervical chiropractors use Spinal Thermography to analyze the spinal nerve system. This is the latest in spinal neurodiagnostics which is also FDA approved. This technology allows for the doctor to have an objective approach during each office visit. Rather than adjusting the spine based on the presence of symptoms, Upper Cervical chiropractors will adjust the spine only when it is necessary. Spinal Thermography uses digital infrared, technology to take a temperature reading of the nervous system along the spine. This is a non-invasive process that is non-radiating and completely safe for people of all ages. Subluxation will cause inflammation along the affected nerves. This will produce patterns of inflammation on either side of the spine that can actually be digitally recorded.
What also makes Upper Cervical Chiropractic unique is that the ultimate objective is to get your spinal alignment to maintain. It is not the amount of adjustments that restores the body's natural ability to heal. It is the amount of time in between adjustments that your body uses to restore the natural healing process and reverse the disease process. Spinal Thermography is used during each office visit to compare the current scan with the original scan. This gives the doctor and the patient an objective assessment tool that allows for both to know when a corrective adjustment is necessary and when one is not.
The following health conditions represent the most common conditions that have responded to Upper Cervical Chiropractic:
headaches. allergies. asthma. ear infections. weak immune system. hearing and visual problems. sense of smell and taste problems. memory or learning problems. acid-reflux. digestive disorders. diabetes. high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems. pulmonary conditions. degenerative spinal conditions. neurological disorders.
There is one single factor that all these health conditions and degenerative disorders have in common. A subluxation has been associated with them all. Since each injury, trauma or accident to the body and/or spine is unique to itself, this has the potential of displacing the upper spine in one of nearly 300 different misalignment patterns, leading to any of the previously mentioned conditions.
Upper Cervical chiropractors have high educational standards. They earn a four year undergraduate degree, typically in the field of science, such as biology. Then they complete a four year doctorate program which even excels beyond the educational requirements of a general medical doctor. Upper Cervical chiropractors then complete another 1-2 years of post-graduate training in their specific field of Upper Cervical Chiropractic. Upper Cervical chiropractor are considered Primary Healthcare Professionals, just like a medical doctor, so you do not need a referral. They can be accessed as a primary portal into the healthcare field and can make any necessary referrals to other medical specialists, should you require the need. Most healthcare plans will offer Chiropractic coverage, which would also cover Upper Cervical specialty.
