Made popular by the world of Mixed Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been named one of the most effective martial arts in the world today. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an extremely young martial art, originating in the early 1900's. A Japanese JuJitsu, a primarily standing art-form, and Judo master from Japan ventured to Brazil and taught Carlos and Helio Gracie his techniques. After he left, the brothers continued to develop and evolve their martial arts form to the point where it took a life of it's own.
In under 100 years, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has now spread across the world like wildfire being practiced internationally and all over the United States. Wisconsin is a growing hotbed for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. For example, Neutral Ground Martial Arts & Functional Fitness Gym has two locations (Grafton, Milwaukee). Here they have 3-4 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt instructors teaching great technique.
Why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is Great for Self-Defense Because of its usage of leverage, momentum and technique, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be performed by people of any age, size, strength or gender. The key is to outsmart your opponent - not out-strength. This concept makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu accessible for both men and women of any age or size - it truly is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone.
