everyone wishes they could just pop out into their windowsill, or fire escape & pick some beautiful lettuce & tomatoes, right? well, it can happen, and quite easily!!
in this day & age, it is more important than ever to know where your food has come from. organic methods of gardening are easier than ever to come by.
info mainly from yougrowgirl.com::
1. make your own compost. with a ratio of brown matter (grass clippings, dead leaves, straw, newspaper, etc.) and green matter (coffee grounds, veggie scraps, seaweed, tea bags, etc.) sprinkled with a bit of water in a container out in the sun, you can have compost in just a couple weeks! aviod fats, meats, oil & bones, or it will REEK!!
2. peat moss, a very essential part of gardening, is taken from rare wetland environments like fens & bogs. the best replacement would be coconut hair!! same basic principle, but a lot less nutritional value, so be careful! luckily enough, in places like pr, i can find it EVERYWHERE!!
3. look for seed exchanges in your area. there are some great ones online, but the best way to know what you are getting, and what works best in your area, are all in front of you. no seed exchanges? start one in your neighborhood!!
4. there is no real way to garden organically as a vegan, but there are limits. bone meal & blood meal, menstural blood, manure, and many MANY chemicals are recommended for use in your plants. i stay away from all of them. but i do get all my dirt from my local rainforest, so i know there are many MANY animal products involved!!
5. it is extremely rewarding to be able to grow your own food. once i moved here to pr i realized how much easier gardening was, then the heavier i got into gardening, the more i respected & learned about permaculture. being able to know you are able to support and sustain your food supply, able to grow veggies that would be way too expensive for everyday use, and the satisfaction from the rewards of a job well done are all amazing feelings.
6. i also get a big kick out of guerrilla gardening, but that is another story for quite another time.
