My son was "diagnosed" with ADHD about 3 wks ago. He will be 12 in May. He has not had any problems with grades, all a's and b's. His only problem that caused anyone to think he had ADHD was that he is a little hyper and doesn't stay quiet in class. He blurts out answers, doesn't do his daily assignments. They wanted to put him in the gifted and talented program, but wouldn't because of his behavior. So his dad took him to a psychiatrist. He gave us the usual questionnaire to fill out. He also had dad give it to my son's teachers. Based on the answers, he has ADHD. I have read that kids can be misdiagnosed due to nutrition and other factors. I also heard that they don't have to take the meds. They can change diet and it could help. Especially if there is an issue with nutrition. Well, with most kids there is an issue with nutrition. This "doctor" tells me that you can't "fix" ADHD with food. They have to be on meds. Of course he says that. He says research and his experience with parents who have tried it, shows that changing diet doesn't work. I don't believe that. I am looking into my options. Does anyone have any advise or links that I can look at.
I am 33 yrs old and have 3 children. A 14 yr old, 12 yr old and a 6 yr old. I am a stay at home mom and I work as a travel agent from home. I have major issues with my neck and shoulders hurting, so I need a good chiro to work on me.
Hi mdtay,
I have seen naturopathic medicine effectively treat children with ADHD using dietary changes and nutritional supplementation. A treatment protocol can include some of the following: evaluation of vitamin and mineral levels, food and environmental allergy testing, specific diets (SCD (Specific Carbohydrate Diet), Gluten Free, Casein Free, Yeast Free), digestive disorder treatments, heavy metal detoxification, and homeopathy. You should consider seeing a naturopathic physician in your area. You can find an ND by going to the following websites: American Association of Naturopathic Physicians <url removed> or the Texas Association of Naturopathic Physicians, <url removed>. If there are no ND's close to you, you may want to consider going to a clinical nutritionist who specializes in whole foods approach to ADHD. If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me.
