A new you starts with a Comprehensive Exam

A Comprehensive Exam is the first step in achieving oral health. It is much more than simply looking at your teeth. In fact, teeth are often the last to be looked at!

The exam begins with a thorough assessment of your medical history as well as your dental history. Many health issues and medications can contribute to oral findings. A thorough exam of the structures of the neck, head, and jaw is performed. Many subtle problems can be revealed by observing how one opens and closes their mouth. Then an intra oral exam is done whereby bi-digital palpation is performed to rule out any lumps or bumps that are not normal. The tongue is evaluated carefully as this is often the first location for oral cancer to develop. Periodontal probings are taken circumferentially around each and every tooth. This assesses the health of the supporting structures for the teeth i.e., gums and bone.

And finally the teeth are examined for signs of decay, wear, fractures, discoloration and how they function together. As you can see, this Comprehensive evaluation cannot be done in a matter of minutes! It requires a high level of diagnostic skill and time, typically one hour. So, if you have not experienced such an exam you have not been adequately treated to ensure a lifetime of dental health!
