Bikini-fy your body

The time has come. Start shedding that winter coat (the extra 10-15 lbs) you put on since the holidays. Spring is around the corner and Summer will be here before you realize that bikini from last year doesn't fit.

Every weight loss program should start with a clean slate. This means detoxifying your body to remove any sluggish obstacles from a highly functioning metabolism and digestive system.

Next, let's tone and change the body composition by burning fat and building muscle. The most efficient way to burn fat is by training in the 60-70% max heart rate range. One easy way to measure this is being able to have a conversation without feeling out of breath. Remember, walking a mile expends the same amount of calories as running a mile. (Helpful training hint: Exercise in the morning before any eating to burn fat right from minute one. The body has consumed its glycogen stores during sleep and will jump into fat for energy). While cardiovascular exercise is the king of fat burning, don't forget about the muscles. Adding some strength training will keep the body balanced and stable. Another benefit is the fact that 1 pound of muscle requires more caloric expenditure to sustain itself than 1 pound of fat.

To get serious results you must train at least 3-4 times per week with a minimum of 20-30 minutes of cardio. Less is still a healthy step in the right direction. Get started slowly and gradually increase your workouts to minimize the risk of injury. As always, drink plenty of water and replace your electrolytes. See you on the track!

Yours in better health,
Dr Rick
