Abstract

According to Ayurveda, a person can move easily without any pain or difficulty if they have healthy joints. Joints are correlated to “SANDHI”, it means a point or place where two or more structures meet together. The science of Sandhi Sharir is known in modern language as Arthrology. We move our joints and it is well supported by soft tissues like muscles, cartilages, ligaments and tendons.

It means the place where the bones join with each other is called Sandhi. It is the joint that helps in the movement. According to Acharya Sushrutha, there are 210 sandhi in the human body which are classified on different basis, whereas Charaka has mentioned 290 and vagbhata has mentioned 2000 joints.

Classification of Sandhi

The joints are mainly classified into two groups,

  1. Cheshtavantha or cheshta yuktha sandhi –These are movable joints and will be more flexible. Example jaw, pelvis, limbs.
  2. Acheshta or Sthira sandhi – These are immovable joints.

Further Sandhi is divided into 8 that is Kora, Ulukhala, Samudga, Pratara, Tunnasevani, Vayustunda, Mandala, Shankhaavarta.

In the body, Vata is the dosha residing in bones and joints. Healthy joints are lubricated by Shleshaka kapha which helps in easy movement. Joint disorders are considered to be the most common disorder in clinical practice.

How are the Joints Affected

There are many reasons like

  • Food that contains an astringent, bitter and pungent taste.
  • Cold and dry climate
  • Less movement or less exercise
  • Also improper digestion

Agni or digestion plays an important role for healthy joints. If your digestion is healthy the joints are healthy.
