Awesome Vacation Ideas for Fans of Fitness

Climbing a mountain with a city below.

The tough part about living a healthy lifestyle is that you can’t take breaks. Taking a break from exercise causes your muscles to begin to atrophy, making it harder to get back in the game when you return. Slacking off on workouts disrupts your routine, making it harder to find the motivation when you back into the swing of things. Splurging on sugary foods can reignite your sweet tooth, prompting you to choose soda over water the next time you go out.

For those of us who are dedicated to achieving our health and fitness goals, this makes it hard to plan vacations. After all, the classical vacation usually involves lots of leisurely activity, late nights, and tasty junk food. This can make it tough if you want to vacation while keeping up an active lifestyle, good lifestyle habits, and a healthy diet.

If you want to get away from it all while sticking to your lifestyle, here are four awesome vacation ideas that are perfect for you.

Connect With Nature

Most people have probably gone on a hike or nature walk at least once in their lives. If you live anywhere near some hills, a forest, or even the mountains, it’s not too difficult to find a nice hike in your area. What you might not know is that there are hikes and there are hikes. You might be surprised to learn that some hikes are considered so world-class that many people will travel from out of state or even out of country just to experience them.

Hiking while on vacation is a great way to stay active and healthy while taking a break from your usual daily grind. If this sounds like your jam, be sure to check out the hiking in Western Australia. With endless beaches, beautiful gorges, and exotic wildlife, there isn’t much that can go wrong here. Plus, at the end of the day you can unwind in Perth with great healthy seafood.

Climb a Mountain

One of the most physically challenging trials that a person can undertake has got to be summiting a striking peak. Mountaineering will test the climber in ways that he or she can’t even imagine until in the thick of it. Steep inclines test our endurance with marathon-like rigor, high altitudes cut down on the oxygen available to climbers, forcing them to do more with less, and huge rocky faces test pure physical strength and mental fortitude.

In fact, for some people the final goal of every workout and protein smoothie is to climb an unassailable peak.

Vacationer beware, however. Mountain climbing is not for the faint of heart. Early in 2017, the famous mountaineer Ueli Steck died after falling during a training climb in the Himalayas. Know your limits and tackle peaks that are within your abilities. If this is your first time climbing, hire a guide who is knowledgeable in safety practices and mountaineering techniques.

If this sounds like your sort of getaway, Colorado or Utah may be calling you. Vacationers with a thirst for something more exotic should consider the Alps in Europe.

Go on a Surfing Trip

A beachside vacation doesn’t have to mean lying in an inflatable tube or tanning for a week. Exercise your core while balancing on a surfboard and catching some radical waves. The swim out will definitely keep your cardio health up, and fresh oysters for dinner are sure to make for a healthy — and very satisfying — meal.

If you’re late to the party, plenty of places in the United States will make great last minute vacation destinations. California hosts some world class surfing in the contiguous states, but more adventurous surfers might want to check out Mexico’s beaches.

Eat Well

I know what you’re thinking. There’s no way I can talk you into visiting the Hershey’s chocolate factory on vacation. It’s just not in the cards. The good news is, you can eat well while eating healthy. Check out the famous Mediterranean diet and then go experience it firsthand in places like Spain, Italy, and Greece.

Pretty much every seaside village on the Mediterranean is known for eating well with tons of great fish, fresh vegetables, cured meats, and fine wine. Along the way, you might get some first-hand insight into why people who stick to the Mediterranean diet have such great heart health.

If you’ve been holding off on a great vacation because you don’t want to sacrifice your healthy lifestyle, then wait no longer. It’s possible to stay in awesome shape while experiencing everything that life has to offer.
