The Benefits of Aging in Place

Making the choice to allow elderly family members to age in place can be a difficult one. The idea itself may seem daunting. Especially for those who may not have health care training, bringing family to an out of home living situation may seem like the easiest route. However, with the help of trained home care professionals, many have found that seniors are much more comfortable and happy aging in the home. Maintaining a sense of purpose & community, lower overall monthly costs, and interaction with loved ones are just a few things that can truly preserve a low stress and fulfilled life in your loved ones. All of these examples are the result of proper at home care.

Community and Sense of Purpose

Often times when an older individual is removed from an at home living situation, a loss of self can be felt. Those with hobbies or consistent interaction with friends and community members may slip into a sense of deprivation or depression when removed from their established lifestyle. Not to mention, a sense of comfort and safety may also be lost. Frequenting familiar places and businesses promotes regularity in many people’s lives. Particularly introverted folks may isolate themselves from new people and interactions when placed into an entirely new living scenario.

Reduce the Risk of Illness

Due to the sheer amount of people on staff, patients present, and visitors at an assisted living facility the risk for common illnesses is significantly increased. Unfortunately, older people don’t always maintain quite as strong of an immune system as they may have once been able to. While, common colds and flu might not regularly be a reason for caution, numerous elderly patients are already victim to other diseases which may make it harder for their bodies to fight off common illnesses. In fact, the weakening effect that flu and colds have on the body often puts older individuals at risk for serious injury including devastating falls.

Family Interaction

Studies have shown that about 90% of seniors feel much more revitalized after spending time with their families. It seems that family visits and reunions frequently inspire elderly family members to stay active and sharp. What’s more, about 70% of seniors surveyed mentioned that they wished they saw their loved ones more often. Largely for those who are retired, family becomes the most important thing in their lives. Being with the ones you care about may begin to take priority over other things that once seemed just as important - such as work, leisure, or other pastimes.

Of course none of these benefits equates to a replacement for medical attention. If your loved one is showing any signs of needing medical attention please contact your doctor right away. Your physician will be able to properly diagnose the situation and conclude the best place of living for your loved one. Although, for those able to age in the home with family support, this might just be the best option financially and emotionally for your loved one.
