Dr. Susan Kelleher,
Broward Avian and exotic animal hospital

I sit here in disbelief as to what occurred today with Cookie.  As I have been reviewing today's events,  I simply cannot believe the negligence that occurred at your hospital today.  Cookie was clearly in pain for a long period of time. Eventually, after a full day of dealing with her pain without pain medication(except for the initial post op meds that were given 24 hours before), her little body went into shock and she died within 10 minutes of our return home.  When we asked the technician during discharge why Cookie was trembling, she said that she had been doing that on and off throughout the day but that Cookie was "fine." She was clearly not fine!!!  She was going into shock and NO ONE at the hospital seemed concerned at all.  Dr. Diaz didn't know that trembling in a rabbit is NOT normal?  Your interns and techs don't know that trembling in a rabbit is not normal?  You are supposed to be experts in rabbit care and this, even as a nurse with NO rabbit medical experience, seems obvious to me.  We then asked for pain medication for Cookie because we know that rabbits don't handle pain very well and I was horrified that it wasn't part of the discharge treatment plan.  We were finally told to just use the TINY bit of leftover Metacam that we had at home from another doctor, IF she needed it. If she needed it?????  She was a post op rabbit who went through a very hard surgery(as you stated on the phone).  She should have been on prophylactic medication throughout the day to prevent bunny pain, shock and eventual death.  She did not die of pneumonia, she died of shock from severe untreated pain.  This could have been prevented and I am horrified that I put our little Cookie in the hands of such unconcerned and negligent staff members. You should know that rabbits need pain medication after surgery and it wasn't even on the discharge prescription list.  I expected so much more of you and your staff. Cookie made it through the surgery fine...she just needed proper care post op and she didn't get it.  I am sick over this because I didn't listen to the horrible reviews that I read online about you and your team. Instead, I trusted you to keep Cookie comfortable and free of pain.  Cookie was our sweet little girl and I had faith in you to take proper care of her, just as I would have if you had a child in my NICU.  Now, I must live with the guilt of taking her to Broward Avian and Exotic for treatment.  And, I will make sure that no one I know will make the same mistake.

They ignored my questions and my appointment seemed rushed. Their staff was not friendly at all, I didn't feel welcome there and waited even to check out as staff carried personal conversations that seemed more important. And the place was not clean. They didn't help me as much as I was hoping and didn't answer all my questions (the vet even got mad at me when I asked questions and was not discussing alternative and less agressive options). She was late and left the room a few times during my appointment. I did not feel she truly cared for my pets issues and rather man handled her. It was pretty hard to find the building, but I eventually found it.
I thought I would give it another try but even then, my vet just left early and had me see her associate who did not experienced at all and told me this was the first year of practising! I went elsewhere after that and feel better with my current vet.

I made an appt. here because another vet wasn t in that day that I needed to go to check on my parrot who was sick. They were very nice and kind, I didn t feel like they were being rude. Kelleher wasn t in so I had to see Diaz, both of whom I never met before the visit. Diaz managed to stick a magnifying glass into my birds mouth and make a diagnostic without checking any of his vitals or even caring to listen to his heart, lungs, or crop. Without doing so he concluded that my bird was congested as well. I was really disappointed because after his short examination he determined that not only would my bird have to be put under anesthesia and operated on but that he would need to go through a 2 week recovery process on hardcore pain relievers and antibiotics. He also managed to scare me by saying that it had to be soon because my birds life was in danger. He then went on to tell me that the surgery would probably also have complications down the road since my bird would probably mess with the operated area of his body.

After this I decided that this whole process along with the money was ridiculous. So i went somewhere else for a second opinion before submitting my bird to this long, hard road. The other vet checked his lungs and told me that he s pretty healthy and is definitely not congested at all. He said that although Diaz properly assessed what is a possible outcome, it is much too early to automatically jump to the highest of extremes. The other vet prescribed a medication and is going to keep track of him.

I'm sure Diaz is very qualified in what he does but he seemed to jump to the conclusion that was the hardest, most extreme, and most importantly (it seemed) the most expensive. I m glad I went somewhere else for a second opinion.

I had to wait forever after I arrived for my appointment. They were running really behind and I was disappointed because it threw off the rest of my day. Their office was kind of gross. I was scared I was going to catch something from being in the office. There is never food or water available for my pet at their office and they almost seem annoyed if I ask them to get some while waiting. Their office was busy and teh vet seemed rushed and snarky. I was worried since I felt my pet was inconveniencing her. She was not in the mood to explain charges or tests.
I had friend's pets dying here and a bird store I go to advises to never bring a bird there!
