Recently we had to contact a family member's former doctors for medical records. Of the four offices and a hospital I called, Dr. Curcio was the only one who personally returned my call not only to offer immediate assistance but also to ask how the family member was doing currently and offered latest medicinal and self-help advice as well. This reminded me how he was the sole psychiatrist/therapist who went beyond the medical realm in trying to help the family member in day to day life. I was very appreciative of that and am grateful for his devotion and genuine concerns. He is one in a million!

This doctor was more worried about his legal liability than he was about the care of a very ill patient. My sister was his patient for five years yet he seemed to have very little knowledge of her deep depression and paranoia. He had been prescribing medication for anxiety and some depression, but not for serious depression and paranoia. I had contacted him for the first time after her attempt to commit suicide. I called him a number of times thereafter to fill him in on how very ill she was, providing him with information about her state of mind, and asking him not to let her miss appointments or reschedule them. He stated he could no longer take my calls and would have to disclose the gist of our conversation to my sister. As I mentioned, she was very paranoid and trusted me with her confidences. I entreated him to listen to me and not disclose anything to her, and to not allow her to miss her appointments; she had missed her appointment with him the day before and he casually rescheduled. However, he did not want to hear anything more I had to say. I called him the next morning at 6 am to let him know my sister had hung herself, one week after her failed suicide attempt. He was very troubled by this news, and I was troubled to hear him say that she seemed fine when he talked to her the day before yesterday. Yes, my sister could hide her mental state very well, but I had gotten through to her and was trying to help her by giving information to this doctor whom I hoped would help me save her life. But he was worried she might sue him and so did not do what was best for his patient. After treating her for over five years, this doctor had no idea who she was.
