The immune system is to protect the body from germs and to help remove some damaged cells. Basic weapons of immunity are: phagocytes (eating microbes and other foreign particles), complement (serum proteins, which may make the foreign particles and contribute to their removal), elections (proteins that bind to carbohydrate structures of microorganisms), antibodies (immunological ), catatonic and NK-cells (seek out and kill virus-infected and perhaps even cancer cells) and  helper T-lymphocytes (helping other cells of the immune system to produce antibodies or cause inflammation or kill microorganisms). Phagocytes have surface molecules which recognize chemical structures present on microbes only, but not on its own cells. Furthermore, they have receptors that allow distinguishing particles coated with antibodies.



The majority of B-cells producing antibodies that react with the structures in the body is eliminated during development in the bone marrow.



NK cells recognize a defective cell from the fact that the surface has abnormally low MHC proteins.



Catatonic and helper T-cells, which by their surface receptors make out own healthy cells, are removed during development in the thymus.
