Hi, I am Karin Spruill, PT, president of the Pick up the Penny club. I have been a member of this club for many years but recently became president when I realized how important picking up pennies really is. Picking up pennies that other people just walk by seemed important to me, initially, because it meant I was noticing the value in something that most other people didn't. If you notice a penny lying on the ground, it also means that you are looking around you and are thus in present time awareness. Many books have been written about the importance of being in the "Now" ( i.e. The Power of Now), that is, not grinding in the past or worrying about the future. Connection to God, or the flow of chi energy, or spirituality are all waiting for us in present moment time.
Today on my daily walk, however, I saw a shiny penny. When I bent to pick it up, with a little bit of a grunt, I realized a more concrete and immediately applicable reason to bend down and pick up a stray penny; do it to maintain your flexibility. I learned in a course I took on Falls and the Elderly a few years ago, that the number one cause of injury when a person falls is lack of flexibility.
If you can bend down to pick up a penny that means you have a normal amount of flexibility in your knees and hips. That will serve you well in the case of your losing your balance sometime in the future. So, please join my Pick up the Penny Club, by paying attention to your surroundings, and bending down and picking up a penny every time you see one on the ground. Your hips will thank you.
