Meditation for Dudes!

Meditation for dudes is the first of what will most likely become a series of blogs about helping the average guy or dude step into enjoying the many benefits of meditation. The hope of this blog and those to follow will be to help guys, and girls too, embrace meditation, and even our seasoned meditators will find this beneficial. My clients are afforded a ton of information on meditation if they desire it and reasons behind these suggestions. If you desire to learn more please feel free to contact us anytime at Blue Pearl Health.

From my understanding, being a dude to, many of my friends have often approached me privately asking questions about meditation, you know because they know I do, they often want to know the real benefits and if this meditation stuff really works. Often with that sort of, well my girlfriend does it, I've read a few blogs about it, but honestly I'm a guy and my old way of relaxing was in front of the television with a cold beer sort of inquiry, but I'm really stressed and need to find a new way to chill out.

So let me give you a crash course, along with some tips even those long term meditators might enjoy. First off, you need to make time for it, really! If you are going to do it, just do it, don't think about it or analyze it or wonder if you are going to be able to do it, just do it! Meditation is not about right or wrong, doing it correct or not, there are no tests afterward, it is just about taking time for yourself and calming your mind so when your dog pees on your slippers you don't wig out. Trust me guys, your girlfriend or wife will really dig your efforts here.

The Space: Find a quiet space in your home, it can be anywhere, even the bedroom. The key is to find a spot where you will not be interrupted for the time you are intending to meditate. If possible, I recommend the room in the home most comfortable for you, even if that is the living room sitting in your reclining chair. The room should also be quiet, including free from noise outside the house if you can avoid it.

The Time: If you are starting out don't book an hour to meditate the entire time. I recommend starting out by setting aside 15-30 minutes, providing enough time to get settled in your room and relax. If you are relaxed and want to go longer perfect, but start slow and in small chunks. Baby steps amigos!

The position: Here is the best tip for guys, trust me. You have no doubt seen pictures of Buddha statues or others meditating with your legs crossed tied tight like a pretzel, I am not trying to offend anyone here, but according to Master John Douglas, an international spiritual healer with complete clairvoyant vision, crossing the legs does something to the bodies natural energy flow and blocks it up. I have personally felt this too, so I agree with him.

Simply, you don't need to cross your legs, keep them straight ahead or slightly bent but not crossed. Try and sit upright in a chair or even your favorite couch and focus first on comfort. Arms at your sides or on the arm rests of a chair, but you need to be comfortable or you will quickly grow frustrated. Next close your eyes.

How to Start: For my elite clients they are all encouraged to begin any meditation program by first listening to Spirit Repair, a meditation program by John Douglas that helps calm your mind and body, how is a secret I share with my clients but it is really cool. For now, trust me on this one, K! You can purchase the CD at www.spirit-repair.com and I don't receive a kick back, it just really works, plain and simple.

This meditation is about 12 minutes long and for the first week or two just listen to it, listening to John's voice just try to calm your mind. Place all of your energy on just staying with his voice and nothing else, that is the goal of practice for the first few weeks. As images of the day creep in, just pull your focus back toward John's voice, another reason why I love this program, his voice is incredibly calming. Once the program has ended, turn it off, you can stop there if you like, or if you want to press on strive to remain in your calm state and imagine a clean slate or blank chalkboard in your mind with your eyes closed.

What not to do: My clients understand this but do not start meditating if you have had a drink or a few beers during the day. There is a secret I share with my clients, alcohol directly affects our emotions, and for someone trying to meditate for the first time, you are going to make this process much more challenging. Secondly, try to avoid drinking tons of coffee shortly before, unless you are used to it like me, choose green tea instead, plus it has tons of health benefits.

The process of meditation is in letting go, and that begins by letting go of all of the mental chatter, a process Spirit Repair will help you with. Guys, when you start try to think of nothing, and if you make it longer than three seconds give yourself a pat on the back, you are a rockstar! Seriously, it took me weeks of practice years ago just to go longer and longer but what I liked the most was giving myself the time just to relax, without worry if I was doing this correct or not, I didn't care, the real gift was just in taking time for myself.
