I have been seeing Dr. Chediak for so many years that I have lost track. He's been assisting me with the medication management of my bipolar disorder. First, all the basics: he's very experienced and quite knowledgeable about psychiatric medications. If he does not know the answer to something, he admits it and helps you brainstorm ways to find out the answer. He frequently has helped me out with samples when I couldn't afford the medications he was prescribing and when I found a lower cost way of obtaining the meds, he asked me for the information about it so he could share it with his other patients who also could not afford this medication. His receptionist is very nice, very knowledgeable about her end of the business, and very professional. She's done a good job of working with my insurance company and explaining things I didn't understand.

The thing I appreciate the most about Dr. Chediak is that he listens to my input on things, especially around medication doses or what I am or am not willing to take. Over the years we have built up a good working relationship. He has his opinions about things, of course, and sometimes he will give me directive advice, but I always feel free to take it or not take it depending on whether it seems like a good idea to me. He supported me coming off 2 very high powered drugs by tapering them slowly over a period of about two years. He wasn't sure it was a good idea for me to stop these drugs but he went along with my wishes and prescribed them in increasingly smaller denominations until I was able to stop completely. I'm nearly 2 years off these medications now and doing okay without them.

Other things: He's never late. I actually don't have much experience with the chairs in his waiting room because he's frequently ready to see me even if I arrive a few minutes early. When I left town on business and forgot to take my medications with me, he was VERY responsive, calling me back immediately and helping me work with a pharmacy in that city to get enough meds that I did not have to miss any doses.

I feel like I always get the personal touch at his office. Dr. Chediak and his receptionist are both very warm and friendly to me. Being on the older side and from Cuba, he is sort of a "character" in many ways, but a very likable character. He also has a great deal of wisdom that comes with age and living in a lot of different countries over the years and I respect that. We don't always agree on everything but I feel that we have a good working relationship and I hope he does not retire for a long time because I've seen a lot of psychiatrists in the past and he's definitely my all time favorite.

After approximately one year of seeing Dr. Chediak on a biweekly basis, my mental disorders have yet to improve. Today I came in for an appointment and was essentially told that I needed to find a new psychiatrist. This was his reaction after I told him (for the umpteenth time) that no, I would not take a certain type of drug from which I've already had nightmarish experiences. For those who have yet to meet Chediak, know that he has a strong accent and can therefore be difficult to communicate with. In my opinion, Chediak might be intellectually capable of remedying your disorders/issues, but he's ill-equipped when it comes to listening and identifying what your real problems are.
