By far, the BEST animal hospital I have ever taken my animals to. I will not take them anywhere else! Compassionate, caring, gentle. And reasonable! Great Dr.'s, Great support staff...

After taking our pets (two dogs and two cats) to these folks for many years, we recently got a new pup that happened to be an unspayed female. We take very good care of our pets, donate to many organizations designed to care for unwanted animals and have owned any number of wonderful "shelter" pets in the past. After having our new pup vaccinated and having visited our vet a number of times, we recently brought her in for a scheduled booster and were told that she would no longer be seen until we had spayed her. She is still very young and we'd actually been (by Dr. Carpenter) that for her safety and well-being that she needed to "lose about 10 pounds" before we could schedule her to be spayed (which we had always intended to do with no plans to have pups). When we got the card in the mail that she was due for a booster, we made an appointment and showed up only to be embarrassed and insulted when three vet techs/office personnel argued that she was NOT to be seen until spayed, per order of Dr. Carpenter.
Without going into any more detail, we've now pulled our records and our pets from this veterinary clinic and will take them elsewhere. It is beyond belief that after years of bringing our pets to Dr. Carpenter and Dr. Shook at Niantic Veterinary, we'd be treated the way we were because of Dr. Carpenter's convictions on spaying and neutering and unwanted pets. These are not shelter animals and we did not bring them there just yesterday - we understand the importance of spaying and neutering - we know how many animals are unwanted, unloved and often put down because someone did not protect them from unwanted pregnancies. We loved the care our pets had gotten in the past at Niantic Animal Hospital and often recommended them to others but this incident and the manner it was handled was enough for us. Please recognize Drs. Carpenter and Shook that you have no right to dictate what choices private petowners make with their own pets so long as they are loved and cared for and protected. Tell your new customers you will not treat their pets unless neutered....they could then choose to go elsewhere, but don't refuse to treat an animal/animals you've been caring for all along...it smacks of "better than thou" attitudes that we just don't have to listen to.
