Felt I had to write a review of Louisiana Veterinary Emergency and my experience with them in 2010 when my dog, Buddy, was hit by a car on New Year's Eve in Abbeville, La. We got him stabilized at a clinic in Lafayette and the Vet there recommended we go to Louisiana Emergency Veterinary Hosp. Buddy is 9 yrs old, 88 lbs, and a rescue mutt with a splendid personality.
His left hip was broken. After going over the options, my partner and I elected to go ahead with the $3,000+ operation and rehabilitation rather than put him down. We travel in a motor coach and spent the winter of 2009-10 in La. which was nothing but continuous rain, high humidity, and winds off Lake Pontchartrain. It was lousy for the humans, but good for Buddy. Four years later Buddy's left leg is giving him problems and we are faced with having to pick him up when he falls over, pick up his poop when he does it laying down cause its too much for him to get up or whine for us, & all those other emotions in deciding a dearly loved pets future. And if we do decide to put him to sleep, we've got to tell 4 adult kids that the dog of their youth is gone. I'm getting teary eyed just writing this.
La. Emergency has gotten some severely negative reviews which I do not think they deserve. Yes it is costly to take your pet to an emergency animal hospital. But over my 75 years I've been to quite a few and all have been up front with the costs of their services. And most of all, if you're going to have a pet, be sure you can afford it. I went ten years without a dog because of reverses in my life and when i turned 50 i got Pooky who failed as a leader dog, but succeed as a beloved dog to my 5 yr old twins. And then we have to get over our "i'll take the dog/cat to the vet tomorrow". NO, do it now, don't let the illness/condition get out of hand. The two ranting reviews were done by pet owners who were dissatisfied with their service/costs/ diagnosis, but I think they have to look to themselves first before castigating Louisiana Veterinary Emergency Care to the degree that they did.
I highly recommend the clinic - they were there when Buddy and I needed them and they did an excellent, skilled job on Buddy.

This place is a joke. I took my dog here when he began vomitting a pink liquid we thought may be blood. While at the vet he began bleeding from his anus uncontrollably. The doctor took X-rays and blood tests and determined he was dehydrated and couldn't tell from the X-rays what was wrong with my dog. They then said my current balance I had to pay for the one nights visit was $500 and that they recommend my dog stay the entire weekend and take multiple different medications to keep him hydrated and then see their internal medicine doctor on Monday and have an ultrasound to try to determine WHAT was wrong. Not treat ANYTHING. All for the low low cost of $1000+ !! Being a young couple with a child on the way, we couldn't afford that course of treatment and asked for alternatives. The only thing offered to us was IV fluids and a shot that would stop the vomitting for 24 hours and they would send him home if we couldn't pay. Three hours later, my dog was on the brink of death. We called the ER vet again once we decided it would be more humane to euthanize him than have him suffer any longer. He was crying in pain and still profusely bleeding. Only after talking to the vet about possibly killing our puppy did the vet FINALLY offer another solution of antibiotics. The total cost of the medication $34. Two days later my puppy is completely fine. All they want to do here is charge you the greatest amount possible and then kick you out if you cannot pay. For $34 I could have saved my puppy hours of suffering. They would rather kill my animal than offer a more reasonable treatment.

This place is a waste of time and money. My dog was brought in between 7:30-8:00 PM, and I wasn't allowed to leave until after 11:00 because the doctor was "busy" tending to other animals--two cats and one dog. My dog ended up staying overnight, for which the clinic charged $700 even though 1.) the doc spent all of five minutes looking at and ordering one measly blood test for my dog, and 2.) he personally reassured me he would charge only $120 for all care ($110 for the walk-in fee, $10 for the test). Also, the receptionist was rude and unhelpful.

His final recommendation was to pick up my dog from there at 7:30 AM the next day to bring her to my regular vet. I should have just waited to do that in the first place, but I love my dog and was worried for her health. This clinic outrageously exploits people's concern for their pets. STAY AWAY, DO NOT GO HERE.

Wasted my time, stole my money and never bothered to do the one very thing which was the reason for my dog's visit in the first place. Had to rescue my dog from them! These people are scam artists, and they are in desperate need of some competent competition.
