I found Dr. Clayborn to be receptive and open. I felt I could share readily and honestly what was bothering me. My visits to him were therapeutic and I would not hesitate to see him again or to recommend him as a therapeutic.

I first met Dr Clayborne in 1989. At that time, I had dropped out of college to secure my financial independence and find help with an abusive and incestuous family of origin. Dr Clayborne was the first therapist I hired. Unfortunately, as I now know – and can show – he covertly supported my incestuous mother and betrayed my confidence to her for the next fifteen years. My boundaries should have been respected. And my mother should have been expected to behave like a responsible parent. Instead, Dr Clayborne allowed her to co-opt the help I was seeking for herself, and in the service of her mission to discredit me. (In my family of origin’s narrative, my mother is the abused child in the family, and I the adult abusing her.)

Throughout the years that followed, my mother stalked me openly. She would show up on my doorstep unannounced and send me inappropriate cards and letters, despite having been repeatedly told I wanted no contact. I moved several times to protect myself. Dr. Clayborne paid attention to my psychological state, but no attention to my mother’s criminal conduct. In hindsight, he does not appear to have recognized what she was doing, much less that it was both illegal and wrong.

I last saw Dr Clayborne as a client in 1997, having spent my twenties working odd jobs for minimum wage to pay for help I never received. Later that year, I packed everything I owned into my car and left SD in a second attempt find the help that I needed.

It was seven years later – in 2004 – that Dr Clayborne’s covert dual relationship with my mother came to light. It came to light during a series of phone conversations between my therapist at the time and my parents. In these conversations, my mother spoke warmly of Dr Clayborne and recounted meetings with him as early as 1990 and as late as 1997. She also proceeded to engage with him over email in the present, which she then forwarded. When confronted, Dr Clayborne denied the dual relationship and made every effort to characterize me as deluded. But by this point, email transcripts of his conversations with my mother – transcripts in which my confidentiality was openly being violated – were in my possession.

I responded by filing a formal complaint regarding Dr Clayborne’s conduct with the SD Board of Counselor Examiners. Unfortunately, the Board did not investigate the case. Witnesses were never called. The email transcripts I provided as evidence were never acknowledged. And after a few years, the case was dismissed.

In 2012, Dr Clayborne’s license to practice in SD was revoked by the Board due to unrelated gross malpractice. He nonetheless retains a successful practice in Sioux Falls SD.

I have suffered a lifetime of severe chronic PTSD, due in no small part to Dr. Clayborne’s unrepentant dishonesty, negligence, and misconduct.

He should not be in practice.

Do not trust him.

When comparing him to others in his field, I would say he is by far the worst I have ever seen. Grossly unethical, untrustworthy, and professionally incompetent. I would not recommend him to anyone.
