Zack’s Rock Glen Manor has been closed since spring 2008 and was demolished in 2012. The building began its life in 1885 as the “Morton House Hotel.” It was built by Rock Glen’s founder, Henry Croll and managed by its namesake, Joel Morton. It operated as hotel featuring a tavern and dance hall for the next 102 years.

The personal care home began in 1987, as “Morton House Personal Care Home” by Leonard and Mae Burger. In 1994/1995 the Burgers leased the personal care home to new proprietors, Joyce and Ray Zakrewsky. It was renamed “Zack’s Rock Glen Manor” in January 1995.

The Zakrewskys were not the sharpest tools in the shed and never incorporated the business, thus missed out on tax breaks, subsidies, and low interest small business loans. The business was insolvent for the 9-10 years that they leased it. In May 2004, the hapless Zakrewskys sold the business to “Zack Realty Inc.” (principals, T. Sawchak, et al.) for $360,000 ($618,339 in 2025). However, the Zakrewskys needed to purchase reals estate from the Burgers for $301,000 ($517,000 in 2025) and lose $59,000 ($101,338 in 2025).

Under Michele Taylor, from May 2004 until October 2007, Zack’s Rock Glen Manor experienced less employee turnover, residents’ quality of life increased, and the personal care expanded its residency.
