My 6 year old Australian Shepherd Harley was under the care of Rabun Animal Hospital for seizures. These started on Fed 14, 2015. I took her to the vet for blood work, which showed no issues. During this visit she was given Triflexis for flea control. She did not have another seizure until early in the morning of March 3rd. On March 3rd she began to have more seizures. I did call Rabun Animal Hospital about these. They called in medication for her which I picked up around 1:00 pm that afternoon and gave her her first dose. She was fine after that with no seizure activity. She had been receiving oral medication for the seizures. I was also told to stop giving her Triflexis.
I had made an appointment for her to have her annual checkup with a blood test so there would be no interruption in her medication. Due to work commitments I had to reschedule it a couple of times. The last time I informed the vet she was low on her meds and I needed to get a refill so she would not run out, this was on 11/13. I ran out of her medication after her last dosage on 11/15. I took her in for a blood test early in the morning on 11/16. I informed the person at the front desk that she was out of her meds and could not miss a dose. She wrote this down on a post it note and said she would inform the vet.
The medication was called in to my local pharmacy, Wal Mart. The medication called in was a different strength than the standard used. The new medication was ordered and was filled the next day. At no time was any offer to get her a couple of pills to carry her over. The vet was aware that missing a dose could cause a potentially deadly seizure.

I left for work at my typical time, 7:00 am, on 11/17. Harley was fine. She gave me kisses like normal and was wiggling her butt like normal. That morning she was jumping around acting fine. When she was let outside to go the bathroom she was fine. She and our other dog stay in our bedroom during the day, we also have cats in our house. When they scratch or play their collars jiggle. Even when Harley had a seizure, before going on meds, my wife heard her having it. My wife did not hear her have a seizure or have any indication there was an issue with her in any way. When I returned home from work on 11/17 Harley was dead.
I called the emergency number for the vet and left two messages, I did not receive a call back. I had to call a third time. I was very upset and my language was very abrasive, but my dog had just died. I was told by the vet that she would never let a dog go without its meds.

At no time from Monday after her blood was drawn did I receive a call from the vet. They are well aware that a lapse in medication for a dog with seizures can cause a fatal seizure. Even after she was placed on meds I never received a call or inquiry as to the health of Harley. I even emailed them a video of her having a seizure so they might better understand what was happening. I was only told to have her start taking the medication. They never had me come in for a follow up after the massed seizure episode of March 3, 2015.

I feel that had the vet taken just a small amount of time to make sure she was covered with her meds she would be fine today. As it is my family has lost a wonderful companion. She was a double registered, AKC and ASCA, purebred dog. She was a confirmation dog in ASCA and was to begin training for agility. She was active and playful right up until I left for work on 11/17. I purchased Harley for my wife after she received the news she was officially in remission for breast cancer. My wife actually trained Harley to retrieve the phone for her in the event she had fallen or had an accident. My 4 year old granddaughter, who we have custody of, grew up with Harley. Our other dog, Scarlett, grew up with Harley as well.

I feel the careless attitude taken by Rabun Animal Hospital directly caused her premature death. Australian Shepherds are a very hearty breed and can live well into their late teens.
