My father entered Riley house facing the end of his journey with lung, kidney, and brain cancer. We were prepared for a long stay and second-guessed our decision many times over. But, my father had other plans for us. He knew he wanted to be at Riley and he knew he wanted to die on his own terms, free from chemo and radiation and all of the other "just one more things" that had been thrust upon him in the hospital. Riley's staff understood this and respected him.
In the hospital, the staff talked to us, but the first thing I noticed was the staff talking to my dad. Telling him what they were going to do AND why. While my dad was still cognizant of his surroundings and could respond, I know this was calming for him. I also know this information was welcome to us.
It was in Riley House that we were finally told that my dad probably didn't have much time left...I didn't have to chase down a nurse and ask questions I had spent hours researching. The information came freely from the Riley staff and it was comforting to know what would be coming and what to expect.
My dad was always comfortable and we were made welcome; as welcome as a suffering family can be. I spent the night with my dad and was given linens and blankets and offered anything I needed on numerous occasions.
At the end, the staff let us know what to expect and walked us through what we needed to to and let us have the time we needed to say our final goodbyes.
Nobody wants to lose a loved one, but if we must, the support of Riley's staff lightened the burden.

My Mom spent about nine days in this wonderful facility. Each day that we went to see her, she was bathe, dressed in a nice soft gown (not a regular hospital gown), and was propped to be resting very comfortably. The staff was wonderful to her and to us. They were always asking about our needs as well as hers. I have ONLY the highest recommendations for this facility and their staff. They give totally of themselves to the patients and the patient's families. God bless each of them.

My family and I were extremely upset because of the nondisclosure of drugs that would be administered to my mom. We were told that she would be given a pain medicine and an anti-anxiety medicine. We were not informed of the effects of these drugs on my mom's body. My mom has had about 7 drops of both the drugs combined. She has been in a comatose state since the administration of these drugs. We wanted my mom to have drugs for pain but not sedate to the point where she is unable to respond. She is currently not eating or eliminating. We are patiently waiting for her to wake up. She is worse off now than she was before we signed up with Hospice. Our plans were to have my mom receive pain medicine. Not slow her brain activity down and nervous down so that she can prepare to die. THAT IS NOT WHAT WE WANTED. I hope that other families will not be deceived by the presentation of the Hospice representatives. This has caused major problems for my mom. At this point, we can't take a gamble with her help. We pray that the medicines wear off soon because she has been sleeping for almost 24 hours. She has eaten once and eliminated one within a 24 hour span. We were told that the nurses would call up immediately to answer any questions that we had. The nurses didn't respond promptly. THIS IS NOT FOR FAMILIES THAT WANT THEIR LOVED ONE TO LIVE.
