I am giving the Oaks of Clearwater a 1 star rating because of Fran Davis. She will make your experience unforgettably terrible. With her severe attidude problem and being rude and lying to patients and staff, Fran is not someone you want your loved one to deal with on an every day basis. DO NOT send your loved ones here as she will leave you regretting you ever made this decision in the first place.

This is a multi-service retirement community that includes Independent Living, Assisted Living and Nursing Care (2nd floor). My mother lived in all three.
Independent Living - Is what it appears to be. If you do not need to have 'services' from the Oaks then it is OK. The exterior Apts appear nice, and I would consider. However the majority of the accommodations are in the high rise.
Three problems with the high rise - first the lack of elevators (only 2 in this 40 year old building). Residents on walkers often wait a long time for elevators to get up and down. Second the North side can be noisy through the poor windows due to street traffic below. Finally the biggest problem is what happens if there is a fire and a need to evacuate? If you are on a walker and live on the 9th floor - can you really get down the stairs in time? It is something I did not consider enough in advance.

The food service is just OK. Nothing great.

Assisted Living - No, don't do it. It is poorly staffed. While they will market rooms for assisted living off that floor - the truth is they will ask residents to move to the assisted living floor (at their own expense). Why? They don't have enough staff to do what they say they will do. The biggest problem with Assisted Living is the AL Director, Fran Davis. She's a snake. She tries her best not to communicate with families. Then she will say one thing and do another. Although she is in tight with the (pathetic) 'Regional Director,' (Nina) she has a past - someone should do a background check on her.
The Nursing floor is hideous (officially known as Oak Bluffs Nursing Center). Investigate it and you will find it has exceptionally low ratings. Residents transfer here for rehab and they never leave alive (really). While there were a few great nurses on this floor (most of who have left) - most of the orderlies did not seem to really care. They would drag and eventually see why a patient's alarm was going off. During the day - it is kept fairly clean. But visit it at night after hours and the disgusting smell(s) will make you nauseous.
Perhaps most disgusting is the Executive Director (a former RN), Richard Lewis. First they used my mother's Medicaid dry while in rehab. Then my mother had a mild cardiac arrest, and was in the hospital for a few days - Rich called me and wanted payment to 'hold her bed.' A practice that is unethical, and asinine as they were less then 80% full. Since I was an 'out of towner,' he decided to prey on me.
The Oaks has poured a ton of money into a new dinning facility on the top floor for marketing purposes, but has let other areas - especially the nursing floor languish.

While this review is accurately negative - that's not to say there are not some really good health care professionals that work in this facility. But many of the good ones do move elsewhere in short order. Beware of the 4 and 5 star reviews of this place. Like a lot of retirement communities - they have a marketing department that will post false reviews. Enter the Oaks at your own risk!

This facility was very easy to work with. they were accommodating to my needs and concerns for my mom. it was clear that they cared more about the interest of my mom than the way they were going to be paid. the staff was very friendly, and i ended up having both of my parents there. my dad is still a current resident at the oaks, and my mom passed away. i will never forget how caring they were toward her, and all the great things they did not accommodate my family. i would recommend to anyone

I was completely at ease during my appointment here. They went to great lengths to make sure I was completely relaxed and comfortable the entire time. They have some of the best customer service I have ever seen. Putting their customers first is definitely a priority here and it shows. It was nice to see them treat their staff with so much respect. It was obvious that they had a good relationship with all of their staff members.
