Epworth Villa... Big promises, no delivery.
My father lived in Epworth Villa independent living for the last three years of his life. I was happy when he chose to move there, seemed like a great facility with caring staff. Not so much. My father was In his apartment, dying for six days. Hospice was with us, thank god, because Epworth provided no support. Not a single person from Epworth ever visited or came to see if if we/he were ok. It felt like, "well, you won't be paying anymore so who cares" Epworth has a lot of words about their high quality care - but the fact is they do not deliver. Do not buy into the Epworth story... It is a lie.

While the memory care unit of Epworth Villa is well run (though understaffed at night), the Susanna Wesley Unit is not well run. The staff are unprofessional, inexperienced, and insensitive. Epworth Villa puts a lot of money into marketing and promotional activities, while cutting costs on patient care. Relatively speaking, they are still sadly one of the best places in OKC, and again, the memory care unit is very very good.
In addition to the above comments, the exact hour my loved one passed away, we were initially denied service what was formerly the Redbud Room by Lauren Cantu, the COO. It was an icy day in OKC, and we had no other choice. Ms. Cantu explained to us we could not eat there without the presence of my loved one who was dieing despite the unbelievable fees my family was paying on a daily basis. The truth is Epworth Villa wants to blind their more active seniors with tricky marketing by restricting who can and cannot eat in certain restaurants of their facility. The way we were treated was deplorable, and Ms. Cantu's lack of professionalism unbelievable. I really question the background of some the "officers" of the organization.

Epworth Villa has always had an excellent reputation in OKC. However, in 2011 an ex-banker became CEO. While they spend capital funds to add new assisted living apartments, they have cut staff in skilled nursing. There are simply not enough aides and nurses to adequately care for the skilled residents. I'm grateful to the few excellent aides and nurses we had. I was less impressed with the dept heads - including restricting my parent's diet to pureed foods to protect them from liability without ever telling us we had the option to override that by signing a waiver. My parent lost 10 lbs off an already frail frame. The PT department did not adequately listen to complaints of pain -if they had listened and spoken with our family or recommended we consider xrays a compression fracture could have been addressed 1 month earlier. The Asst Dir of Nursing was excellent at quoting company marketing propaganda, but seemed ill-equipped to be in her position. Sadly, i don't think Epworth can rely on its past good reputation much longer. Make sure you spend time there observing before putting a loved one here.

This is an awful place for family to ever get information. They called, left absolutely no information other than a phone number and a name and said to call back. I left 5 voice mail messages. Finally tracked down a main number, spoke with 3 people and got no help at all. Then someone said he'd get someone to help me and instead- transferred me to the phone number of the person I'd been leaving messages for! Horrible experience -- they're incompetent and do absolutely nothing to help the family even when the patient has given the family member's name as the main contact.
