Pacific Gardens; January 7, 2013 to January 14, 2013

My father was moved to Pacific Gardens for rehabilitation from Congestive Heart Disease and COPD, January 7th 2013. There was hope that physical therapy could bring him back home. Kaiser told us that he would be there for one week, and then Kaiser would send a doctor to assess him. The transfer went well, the staff at Pacific Gardens was very helpful with moving him in. We have been told, by freinds, that one must be present at rehab hospitals to insure good care of the loved ones. My sister and I took shifts to insure that some one was with my Dad during the day time. The first day, Monday, the Physical Therapist said they had him sitting up on the edge of the bed, but he was very wobbly. Tuesday while I was there the PT came in and talked to him. No movement out of bed or to sit up. Dad was weakening. Each day I met another staff member from Pacific Gardens, the aids, the activities director, no more PT. Wednesday I found my dad not very responsive, just lying in bed, saying he wanted to die, the staff told me he refused his meds and hasn’t eaten any food, my sister and I were able to get him to take them. Thursday his condition was the same as Wednesday. Friday he was worse, very agitated, and moaning in pain. I asked if the staff were giving him anything for pain, no they hadn’t. A nurse came in and said he could have Hydrocdone every 6 hours. The first one was given at 12 noon, my sister made sure the second dose was given. Saturday he was unresponsive and the agitation has increased, again I had to ask for the Hydrocdone. He has not eaten now since Tuesday, yes he was refusing his food, but no attempt was seen to get him to eat or to help make him calm and comfortable. Sunday was bad, the nurse said he had his hydrocdone in the morning and he could only give him another at 11am, Dad was very agitated and restless, crying out in pain. He was holding his call light, unbeknown to me, and the aids kept coming in, eventually the head nurse came in and said she would call his Dr and see if he could get more pain med’s early. The answer was yes. I was then told that his Dr would be in to see him on Monday, to assess Dad.
So far we have been left alone with my Dad to take care of him, we had to ask for the care he was given, he wore the same dirty arm sleeves the whole week, along with any gaze, cotton balls, blood, or what ever was on his arms when he came in. We took those off at Kaiser, we did say that we would try to feed him, but it seems that we were in charge of his meds also. A nurse would put on the breathing mask with the meds but never came back to check on him or remove the mask.
When the Dr, from Kaiser, came in on Monday he immediately called the ambulance and sent him back to emergency. He has developed a massive infection that spread through his body, which was the cause of his uneasiness and pain. Not once was any blood taken or any thought given to his worsening condition.
To top this off when the Dr was at Pacific Gardens, a physical therapist told him they had Dad standing and walking, but because of loss of breath he collapsed. My Dad has not been out of that bed for a week! There are so many things that went wrong we are at a loss of words.
As hind sight, yes you need to stay with your loved ones while in this situation, but need to be very proactive with the staff and demand that they do the job they are there to perform.
