My brother was transferred to Daughters of Jacob Nursing Home in the Bronx, NY from Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY in the second week of June 2015. DOJ was the only facility that would take him because he was a Medicaid/Medicare patient with COPD that had tracheostomy with ventilator support and kidney failure for which he received dialysis.

Being a rehabilitation center, DOJ was supposed to ween him off of the ventilator so he could go back home to Schenectady as discussed.
My Brother died on July 10th ( approx. a month after arriving), from sepsis that was the result of an abscess he had that went from his throat, down his spine and into his scrotum. I saw him the Thursday before he passed and he complained about a pain in his groin. When I inquired with the DOJ nursing staff, they said he had a boil on his scrotum and they were treating it with antibiotics.
When my brother was in Ellis hospital in Schenectady, NY, he was able to walk to the bathroom and eat solid food. When he got to Daughters of Jacob, they refused to give him a bedside commode or walk him to the bathroom, instead they put him in a diaper and kept him in bed when he was not at dialysis, and he was eating pureed food.Their justification for the diaper was that he was too weak to walk, and they did not want him falling.

I don’t know if DOJ was negligent and caused his death. I don’t have the money nor am I in the position to pursue the issue. I am just sharing my story, in hopes that people think twice about sending or allowing their loved ones to be placed in the care of this facility.

The staff gave good lip service, but God only knows what they did after I left. They always appeared to be short staffed and my brother complained that it took a very long time for a nurse to respond to his call light. His room was always hot as if AC was nonexistent. I had to purchase him a cooling cloth and a fan to put on his over bed table.

He was chronically ill as he had COPD, Kidney failure and heart issues. Yet, it was sepsis which killed him the day after he was admitted to Bronx Lennox Hospital.

Don’t send your sick rat, let alone a relative to this facility, you may never see them again!

DO NOT go here nor send anyone you know . I was there and this place is a MAJOR SH*T HOLE . Very few if any cared . The facility and the way its run is the worst. Just seeing how some of the patients are treated and listening to them cursing this place each and every day . Totally unsanitary . Be Warned .....I kid you not . It will be one of the worst mistakes of your life !
Most of , if not all the patience in their deserve a far better place and fate . The state needs to take the wrecking ball to this nightmare of a place and all of the ones like it. This place is even worse then the one you see in the movie one flew over the cuckoo's nest .This place deserves NO STARS !

Not at all! I had to schedule an appointment for absolutely everything!
