Seriously if you love your family members even a little bit do not put them in this facility. This is a place you send your loved ones to die. Food is atrocious, Sylvia (RN) on south east side of building is the worst nurse [shows no compassion, doesn't get the concept of patients rights (that the patient has a right to refuse care), lies to your face, will claim that she gave patient pills and doesn't, and is downright rude to the patients and CNA's, plus she is the Directors BFF], every other nurse is AMAZING. The rehab and therapy department staff are great and work their butts off. But they have overloaded the CNA's with to many patients (they need to put more CNA's on per shift, severely understaffed), and the patients needs are not met. The patient should not be waiting more than 10 minutes for a CNA, but the facility higher ups don't give a crap, and won't hire more because we have as many as we need, which is total BS. The CNA's are constantly stressed out and don't have time to take there breaks, and are yelled at for not having the time to take them. Within the time I was working there they lost many AMAZING CNA's because of the upper management's rudeness and hatred for them. They are our first line of defense to protect the patients and to help them, and they (CNA's) are treated terribly for working there. I loved working as a CNA here (only for the Patients), but I couldn't do it anymore.

Please I BEG of you don't send the ones you love here.

Sincerely,
A Frustrated Former Employee

My loved one was at Canterbury twice, once for 19 days and once for almost 6 weeks. The head nurses both times were excellent and the social worker was excellent. The cleaning crew is very good. I do sense some understaffing amonst aids, in the sense that just about every day I dumped urine from the bedside urinal. Several times I had to hunt for blankets. After a couple weeks, the coverlets were missing altogether - one of the helpers said they were being washed, but they never came back to the beds at all. I ended up bringing in a blanket myself. Numerous times salt was taken away, even if it was labeled. Visitors noticed a pronounced lack of attention when the 'call nurse' button was pushed - to equal up to 4 hours before someone came to ask what was wrong. The food was sometimes very good and sometimes truly terrible (as in, too many starches in a meal or just not edible (hard)). Extra coffee service is good and so is the ready availability of ice and ice water, if someone can come and answer the call nurse button. I think they are getting better. The staff is mostly friendly and the aides are definitely friendly.

My grandmother died there in a horrible state. She was there about two years and every time I went to visit it was more and more concerning. When she arrived she had slight dementia and could walk on her own although admittedly not reliably. In less then two years, at the end she couldn't communicate or move on her own.
They had her in a wheelchair right away, alarmed it soon after because she was getting out on her own. They do this because they are severely understaffed and can only manage everyone if they are in wheelchairs and can't keep an eye on the mobile ones to make sure they don't fall. It looked like 90% of the residents were wheelchair bound or forced to be.
The facilities smell of dirty diapers especially when the evening/night staff is there, it's stuffy, windows and curtains are never opened and almost all the gifts that were left for my grandmother were stolen. One time I found her mouth, clothes and her wheelchair covered in vomit, despite the fact that an attendant had just gotten her out of bed and into the wheelchair the vomit on the chair and clothes was dried, so obviously had been there before she was awakened. The attendant had just put her in her chair and wheeled her into the hallway to wait to be taken to dinner not even noticing the state she was in.
In that facility they are ignored and neglected. In the end, as nice as everyone seemed there, I never trusted her in the hands of that facility but other family members had legal say, not me. In that facility my grandmother wasn't allowed personal items, was moved from room to room to room, she ended up sleeping 23 hours a day because she was was bored and depressed and left alone with had nothing to do because of her poor eyesight and hearing. This place is a place to send family members to die. There is no energy or thought put into their mental and emotional well being, only attempts to medicate them into submission.
If you care about yourself or family member DO NOT let them come to this place.
