Ten years ago, I brought my three month old child to Dr. Steele, who diagnosed my child with strabismus. After three months of exclusive patching, the situation got worse and Dr. Steele instilled fear that if I didn't operate my child would never see normally. I consulted top strabismus experts around the globe and developed a non-surgical treatment plan. The strabismus fully rectified and my child has clear vision screenings every year. Fast forward 10 years, I no longer live in NYC and we begin working with an amazing optometry team at UCSF. When I shared the case notes, the team shared that the general protocol for my child's type of strabismus should have been glasses first, patching if glasses didn't help, followed by surgery as a last resort. Not the treatment plan outlined by Dr. Steele. I am forever grateful that I followed my mother's intuition and left this practice. As a young parent, be wary of all the five star (likely paid) reviews on these sites.

This could not have been a worse experience. Staff they stick you in exam room with were amongst the least intelligent people I have encountered working in a doctor's office. Dr orders drops put in newborn's eyes without explaining why and when we refused to allow staffer to do it without explanation, it took nearly an hour for Dr to return to explain it to us, whereupon she pried on our fear as new parents and told us of her last parent to refuse the test that now has a blind child. She actually went so far as to threaten to not allow us to leave the office before signing a release if we refused the exam. Also, for anyone impressed with their well appointed office, you should know that you are paying for that when you pay for the refractive tests that are non covered by standard medical insurance and are totally unnecessary for a newborn, assuming it was even performed.

Their staff was not friendly at all, I didn't feel welcome there. I would never visit them again. I was very disappointed. I try to make an appointment and the staff seem not to care about my child's needs. The women I spoke to gave me an appointment for over a month later. This women did not inform me that I was schedule to see a different doctor. I made it very clear I was refer to see Dr.Mark Steele. Feeling uneasy I called back and cancelled the appointment and was told that I was schedule to see another Doctor. WOW !! HOW UNPROFESSIONAL

They were so kind and attentive to me. I didn't have to worry about them arguing with me, or contradicting what I had to say, which has been a problem for me at other places. They were by far one of the best I've ever seen in their field. It was obvious that they've been exceeding their clients' expectations for many years. The parking situation at their office was ridiculous. I ended up having to pay for parking because there were no spots available near the office. They have some of the best customer service I have ever seen. Putting their customers first is definitely a priority here and it shows. I was happy that I got in for a follow-up appointment because it helped a lot. However, had I not made the appointment, there never would have been one. It would've been nice if they would have recommended one.
