I saw Dr. Pamela Moss between the ages of 13-17 starting, I believe, in 2002. I have been through many therapists and psychiatrists including 2 stays at a mental hospitals since then.

Many of these experiences have been better and some have been worse, far worse.

I truly believe she wants to help. I can now say I truly believe that SHE BELIEVED that she was making the right decisions on my behalf. Whether or not she CARED (as in had the human emotion of empathy or any other human emotion for that matter) I still cannot say with certainty.

Whether or not her liberal rotating array of pharmaceutical interventions harmed me more than I may have otherwise come to harm by other unknown means is beyond the scope of human ability to ascertain.

All I know is how I felt. I felt numb. I felt angry. I felt confused and yet boxed in, restrained. I felt that I was never truly listened to or taken seriously. Sure I was just a kid but I was very intelligent, aware and sensitive and there were serious side effects that I was experiencing from the medications I was prescribed which were either glossed over, not asked about or written off as part of my OCD.

I don't remember ever being asked about the intense emotional suffering I had gone through or the ghosts that already haunted me many nights.

She paid lip service to the fact that I was human and had emotions, goals, dreams but I don't feel like she was much different from the mainstream model of "a pill for your ills" or "tell me on a scale of one to 10 how bad it is and I'll translate that to milligrams and call it in to the pharmacy."

Was she terrible? Did she have ill will or was she on a selfish, egoic power trip? No and the same cannot be said for certain psychiatrists I have experienced since then.

Did she make me feel understood, listened to, cared for of heard? No or at least not in the way I have experienced from many subsequent experiences with therapists.

While not the warmest person, Dr Moss is a very good clinician with teens, and very importantly does not overmedicate, at least in my experience when she saw my teenage child. And unlike some psychiatrists, she encouraged psychotherapy along with medication.
