It was long ago, somewhere around 1990. I had been hospitalized for severe, chronic migraines. The attending neurologist called in Dr. Chua (unbeknownst to me, without notifying me). I was not too pleased since my migraines were not at all related to emotional reasons, which were later confirmed to be hormonal-caused. Nonetheless, the neurologist felt compelled to call in Dr. Chua for an evaluation. I later consulted with a widely known and well-respected psychologist who concluded it was inappropriately handled. Dr. Chua, nonetheless, seemed to "think" I had an underlying anxiety disorder (based on a whopping 15 min of chitchat). Hence, he put me on medication. Suffice to say, I did not want to be put on any drugs, nor did I agree with his assessment, and I did not appreciate whatsoever the manner in which the evaluation was conducted. If it were to happen again, I would do things differently. However, as I recall Dr. Chua, I remember him to be quiet-natured and courteous however opinionated. Since I did not appreciate the unannounced visit I was extremely defensive. As a psychiatrist, he should have foreseen that such an unannounced visit could/WOULD cause problems, defensiveness and ultimately lead to a wrong diagnosis (which it did). It's unfortunate because Dr. Chua could have approached the situation entirely differently and offered me the option to choose whether I wanted to talk with him there or in a clinic setting. Instead, it was forced on me in a setting where I was naturally uncomfortable. Had the hospitalization been due to psych reasons, I could have understand but because it was to get the migraines under control, there was no valid reason to call a 'surprise' psych eval.

All that said -- Dr. Chua was generally polite, however. Despite the circumstances under which we met, he was professional and quite pleasant. As for the neurologist? Because of his poor conduct and independent decisions, I fired him and found a competent neurologist who specialized in migraines.
