Steven Jacob seems to be a good dentist. His support staff seem very friendly, knowledgeable, and competent. However, they have a misguided policy not allowing parents in the room during treatment. This was never disclosed to my wife or me during scheduling, only seconds before the ensuing treatment. SJ also spoke a mistruth direclty to me about the policy, indicating it is better for the child (policy is obviously for the dentist alone). I write this review as a disastisfied customer of SJ for bad policy and untruthfulness but not the quality of care. Following are my thoughts if they may be of assitance to parents:

Responsible and loving parents do not want to be in the room to make it worse on their child or the dentist. Experience has taught that these parents help their children in acclimating to services rendered by professionals. Further, these parents want to witness what is happening to a minor (whom they are responsible for legally and morally) during procedures. These parents are good silent witnesses in support of their children, and the dentist if the child is anxious. A proper dentist should allow the parent in the room with instruction on silent witnessing, not banning all parents because a few are inconvenient for the dentist.

Here is what happened: My wife initially scheduled an appointment for her and 2 of our children, age 4 and 5. My 5 year old son needed a return visit for a filling (a little more involved than a cleaning of course). I took my son for this appointment and took him back to the room. After chatting with SJ, he asked me to go back to the waiting room. Which I declined and indicated I would stay in the room for this procedure (in a chair they already have in the room, out of sight of the patient when in reclined position). He stated it was policy and better for the child. I indicated I have never heard of such a policy from any other dentist. He immediately snapped off his gloves and said I don't have to treat him if you don't wish (rather inconsiderate, though I probably was as well in my shock). I ultimately let him treat my son while I attended the waiting room due to the appointment already scheduled, being off work, my son off school, and time needed to get into another dentist. My son seemed fine afterwards, but that is not justification for inadequate disclosure, untruthfullness regarding policy purpose, and being inconsiderate.

Their staff is the most friendly, welcoming staff I've ever dealt with. They are very professional, and friendly, which makes the whole experience that much better. All my questions were answered. I will absolutely return. I had an amazing experience, and they were by far the best I've ever seen.
