I've gone to Southwest from the beginning of time. I've only had two complaints. The first, the long waits. If it were County, you'd probably die in the waiting room. The second, Helen Nikolas. Story: At one of my first ever gyno appts she was rude, brash, and just an awful person. After that appt, I always scheduled future appts around the other doctors' schedules, so I never had her again. On the upside, the staff has always been courteous, friendly, helpful and compassionate...especially the nurses.

Well, my complaints have changed a bit. I recently got pregnant. I called the office and they made an appt for me when I would be around 8 weeks. Naturally, the doctor that saw me was Nikolas. I don't know if this woman has a hard-on for me or what, but the minute she walked into the room, she looks at my boyfriend (whom I've been dating for years) and me and goes, "So this wasn't a planned pregnancy was it?”

That statement set the tone for my first ever OB appt. Again, she was rude, brash and extremely judgmental. From her 1970's outfit - to the spiteful look on her face (which never left), it was hard to look at her. The appt only got worse and the tears just kept on coming .. I am emotional you know. So I was tearing up because of how sad and uncomfortable I felt and she goes, "I need a mom right now, pull it together."

Additionally, Nickolas kicked my boot that was on the floor out of the way (still pisses me off) and didn't offer advice or what should have been, doctor talk in regards to the pregnancy, at all. After she felt my uterus she didn't even tell me how far along I felt. Before she left the room I had to ask her how far along I felt. She didn't order an ultrasound, so I guess I don't really even know if I'm pregnant? However the nurse said, "They always take the patient's word if a positive pregnancy test was taken. Chances are, you're pregnant." I find that very interesting.

Consequently, Nickolas never even told me when my due date was. This cold- hearted woman, obviously could careless about my pregnancy as a whole. I was extremely excited prior to the visit. I mean, come on, it's my first baby. We were scared, excited and walked in there wanting our questions answered. Well, we left the office (me in tears, of course), even more scared, defeated and had even more questions that went unanswered.

I spoke to a nurse after the doctor left. Nikolas was in my room for a total of 15 minutes, which I was told that your first OB appt takes a very long time because the doctor goes through EVERYTHING with a new mom. The nurse gave me all the information the doctor didn't, including my due date. I still don't have an ultrasound though.

My plan of attack: speaking to the office manager to see if there is a course of action to take where Nickolas will never be my OB. If they can’t do that, I will need to switch to a different practice. This was the worst experience of my life and I would never want a new mom or an existing mom to go through something like I did! Hell - being a new mom is scary enough, why would you want to see a doctor to scare you even more?

Oh yes, how could I forget. Nickolas even spoke to my boyfriend and told him that it's not necessary for the man to cut the umbilical cord, "That’s what you people pay me for."

Great doctor.

They went out of their way to make me feel special and respected, and were very sympathetic to my situation. I've never seen more kindness and empathy anywhere else. I love that they are always more than happy to answer my questions, and actually welcome questions. I've felt awkward at some other places I've visited when I've tried to ask a lot of questions, but not here. They always have an immediate answer for me when I call with a question. They would never try to get me to make an appointment unless I really needed one.
