Dr. Burson reversed what was a life threatening sinus problem for me. Somehow I had a mass of fungus that had infected my left sinus cavity and possibly been there for several months and growing daily. The situation put extreme pressure on my left sinus causing headaches, elevated blood pressure and if not treated and removed would have possibly caused a stroke. The blockage was overlooked in prior visits to my primary care physician. Dr. Burson examined me and immediately got me into surgery. He removed the mass of fungus and treated me in subsequent months until the problem was rectified. If you want a truly concerned and knowledgeable ENT doctor, make an appointment to see Dr. Burson.

While Dr. Burson is a very good doctor, my issue is more ethical in nature. While in his office for a routine office consultation, he opted to use a small handheld device (a nasal scope) to take a deeper look into my nasal passages. The tube/scope was in my nostrils for a total of 10-15 seconds, in his hand for less than a minute. Only later when the billing statement was received did I learn use of this device was coded as a separate service with a charge of $343, and was not included in the $195 office consultation. It was never communicated to me that use of this device constituted a separate service and associated charge. My issue is with the lack of communication, an action I believe to be an ethical responsibility of a Doctor's interaction with a patient. In discussing this matter with the practice's office manager, she repeatedly hid behind a form every patient must sign which states something along the lines of "additional services and procedures may be required", though this document in no way releaves the doctor of the ethical responsibility to openly communicate with the patient about services rendered and associated costs of said services. From my perspective, this behavior erodes the ethical foundation upon which a Doctor should practice and interact with patients.
