Beware! Knowing what I know now, I should have written this review a long time ago. In fact, my first clue about Dr. Warfield should have been in 2014. I went to emergency with a scalp laceration and got staples in my head. I was told to follow up with my PCP, Dr. Warfield, and when I did, he said, “The staples should come out on Friday and I’m off on Friday.” In 9/2015 I went to Dr. Warfield for my annual physical. Labs were done and I was given a clean bill of health. By 11/2015, I was losing weight and was extremely thirsty. I let it go because of the holidays. I was becoming increasingly thirsty (to the point of drinking so much water that I wouldn’t go anywhere because I had to stay near a bathroom and still didn’t always make it in time), and was still losing weight. In 1/2016 I went to see Dr. Warfield and told him I had incredible thirst and was losing weight. I have hemochromatosis, which can attack the body’s organs and this was in my medical history. He ordered labs and came back with a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes. I was shocked since there had never been any indication of my blood sugar being high and I have no family history of Type 2 Diabetes. He prescribed Metformin and referred me to a dietician. I immediately saw the dietician and began eating accordingly and working out daily. Two weeks later, I went back to Dr. Warfield and had more labs to which he prescribed Januvia along with the Metformin. I called him to get a glucose meter and was told he would not prescribe one. I had been working with a diabetic coach at my insurance company who was surprised and immediately sent me a glucose meter. I saw him again a month later. Despite the fact that I kept working out, going to the dietician, kept losing weight, and taking the medication, my extreme thirst and weight loss continued and my blood sugar remained dangerously high. Finally, when I was down to 90 lbs. (I’m 5’4”) and on the insistence of my family and diabetic coach, I switched doctors. My new doctor ordered labs and a SIMPLE blood test resulted in a Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis. Dr. Warfield should have checked initially for Type 1 Diabetes, especially when I had no history of Type 2 Diabetes, I was getting no better with diet along with exercise and the medications, and have hemochromatosis. I have often thought about Dr. Warfield’s lack of a proper diagnoses, lack of thoroughness, and refusal to prescribe a meter. It has infuriated me ever since. I realized how much my life was on the line when my granddaughter was recently hospitalized with ketoacidosis and Type 1 Diabetes. I began insulin therapy and am now fine.
