When I was pregnant, Gross made me feel like my reasonable questions and concerns were invalid and foolish. He gave me a rough internal exam without using any lubrication, causing me pain and discomfort. I felt violated. When my water broke, he ordered me to the hospital and when there, he told me that it was terrible that my water broke and that I wasn't feeling any contractions, as if it was my fault. He urged me to wait to receive the epidural and when I couldn't withstand the pain for very long, he mocked me for getting it so quickly. He told me I might need a C-Section, but left the room without reassuring me that a C-Section would not be so bad. When I did end up needing a C-Section, instead of comforting and calming me, he told me to pull myself together. The whole time it felt like I was just getting a C-Section so that he could go home to his family BBQ (my son was born July 4th weekend). During his visits to me at the hospital, when I asked about what I was forbidden from doing, he made many sexist remarks about women and grocery shopping. At subsequent visits, each time he spoke to me about my C-Section, he mentioned a different reason. While the reasons were not mutually exclusive, it was strange how he kept changing the reasons for the C-section. He made me feel guilty for being upset about the C-section by saying that my son was beautiful and healthy. While I am very thankful that my son is so beautiful and healthy, I will always wonder whether I truly needed an extremely invasive procedure that had a difficult recovery or if my doctor was just rushing out the door. Because of his terrible bedside manner, he never gained my trust as a doctor. The worst part is, I know women who are his biggest fans, which makes me think that he chose to victimize and bully me in particular. I truly think he is a misogynist who chose the profession of obstetrics because he likes seeing women uncomfortable and in compromising positions.
