Zaretskaya is an idiot. I made an appointment and a month in advance was the soonest available. The appointment was for 4:00 p. m. At about the same time, two young men, groomed like circus ponies and dressed like a pair of gigolos on a Saturday night, arrived at the office and presented the receptionist with a fundraiser-sized box of Sarris chocolates. Aha, I thought! Drug reps! I was called to the exam room by the receptionist, who was already starting to hit the chocolate bars, at 4:30. Because I knew the drug reps were trying to see Zaretskaya also, I left the exam room door ajar so I could see the hallway. Surely enough, as Zaretskaya started to enter the room I was in, the drug reps were in the hall and the receptionist called her to meet with them. I left the exam room and reminded her that I was waiting and had an appointment while they were drop-ins. I suggested that patients should take priority over drug reps. She claimed they were bringing vital drugs for her patients. My question as to whether the drugs were in the Sarris box went unanswered. Zaretskaya's eyes were flat and black and dead inside. She didn't care that she was putting more importance on drug reps than patients and didn't even have the sense to notice that she had made a poor choice and that she should try to rectify the situation. Since she cared so little for me as a patient, I left. Complaints filed with UPMC, my insurance carrier, and to the manager of the UPMC facility that houses Zaretskaya's practice yielded an investigation. That alone gratified me, knowing that they recognized that something inappropriate had taken place. The receptionist, the office manager and Zaretskaya were interviewed. Investigations resulted in stating that since Zaretskaya is not employed by UPMC she is not held to their regulations concerning gifts from sales reps. A letter of apology was sent from the office manager for "any misunderstanding on my part". At least I have the pleasure of knowing that Zaretskaya was put on notice and her poor behavior was recognized and recorded. Patients are too often treated like second class citizens, as a necessary evil by doctors and medical institutions. I refuse to stand for such behavior and more people need to knock their doctors of their pedestals and stand up for respectful, humane treatment. Avoid Zaretskaya! Her attitude will not help you get well.
