We moved to Juneau when my son was a year old. He has special needs and had been suffering with constipation since birth. Also, his gut was so big that the only thing he could wear was overalls. Our pediatrician in Anchorage had dismissed my concerns stating it was a result of his low muscle tone and that bowel movements would improve as he got stronger. On arriving in Juneau, I took my son's medical records to Dr. McCabe's office and made an appointment for 3 months in the future--for his standard 15 month check-up. The next evening Dr. McCabe called me and said that after reading through my son's records he wanted to see him as soon as possible. We went in the next day and as soon as Dr. McCabe looked at my son, he knew something was very wrong. X-rays showed my son's body was full of poop. Dr. McCabe told us to get to Children's Hospital in Seattle as soon as possible and asked for our travel information so he could set up an appointment for us to see a pediatric gastroenterologist there. It turns out my son has Hirschsprung's disease. He would have died from internal poisoning had things continued as they were.
Dr. McCabe saved my son's life. He took the time to read my son's medical records as soon as he got them--instead of waiting the 3 months until our first visit with him. And one look at my son told him something was wrong...unlike the Anchorage doctor who blamed the distended gut on low muscle tone.
Dr. McCabe saw all of my children during our 3 years of living in Juneau. He always listened to us, was attentive and thorough. While I was happy to leave Juneau, I was very sorry to have to leave the wonderful, wise, and life-saving Dr. McCabe.
