I was referred to this neurologist by my neurosurgeon. Upon arrival, the front desk person said I owed $36 (20% coinsurance). I told her that according to my insurance, I wasn't supposed to pay anything at the time of service. They were to file claim and then when I received both the doctor bill and EOB from insurance co, if I owed anything, I could pay by using my HRA debit card or out of pocket. Since she insisted that I pay before being seen, I attempted to give her my HRA debit card to pay up front but she said they don't take any kind of credit or debit card and I had to pay by check or cash. I told her I didn't have my checkbook with me because I didn't know all of this and attempted to give her $20 in cash that my husband had and could pay the $16 difference using my HRA debit card when I got home. However, they would not accept this either and I had to cancel my appt. over $16 so I left the office crying. Like my husband said, I don't want to deal with a doctor or their staff that would treat a patient like this, more worried about the $16 that I didn't have on me than my health issues.
