My mother was diagnosed with CLL. She was otherwise healthy and in her 50's. In addition to her CLL, she developed AIHA. She called to say her H&H were critically low and she would be transfused the next day. I questioned why she was not admitted to the hospital for cardiac monitoring and blood ASAP. She was told tomorrow was fine. The next day the blood bank was having difficulties crossmatching her blood. Every crossmatch hemolyzed. The brilliant MK Shah advised to go ahead and transfuse two units, which were known to hemolyze. He would have killed my mother if not for my medical background and good sense. Healthcare in WV is lacking and he is a prime example why. I feel many folks who have been the unfortunate receipients of his care have died prematurely. If I lived in town, I would gladly stand in front of his office with a sign stating simply, "Come and see MK Shah if you would like to die soon".
