Dr. Rohan Mathur is a neurologist and neurointensivist at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center whose work sits at the intersection of innovation, humanism, and education in neurocritical care. He provides comprehensive care for patients with life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical conditions and serves as Associate Director of the Precision Medicine Center of Excellence in Neurocritical Care and Medical Director of the Neurosciences Intermediate Care Unit. He also serves as the neurological and neurocritical care consultant to the Johns Hopkins Special Pathogens Unit and Biocontainment Center.
Driven by a commitment to advancing precision medicine in acute brain injury, Dr. Mathur leads translational and clinical research focused on improving diagnosis and treatment of elevated intracranial pressure, coma, and disorders of consciousness. As Associate Director of the Precision Medicine Center of Excellence in Neurocritical Care, he helps oversee a multidisciplinary team of physicians, data scientists, applied mathematicians and engineers developing AI-enabled monitoring and decision-support tools for critically ill patients. His research has been supported by the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award and funding through the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.
Equally dedicated to compassionate and humanistic patient care, Dr. Mathur serves as core faculty for the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanizing Medicine. He has led initiatives to integrate Music Therapy into the neurocritical care environment and to elevate patient values, narratives, and goals in ICU care, ensuring that cutting-edge care remains deeply patient-centered.
A recognized educator and mentor, Dr. Mathur is core faculty for the Neurocritical Care Fellowship and a member of the Osler Attending Preceptor Program. He has received multiple institutional teaching honors, including Attending Physician of the Year from the Johns Hopkins Critical Care Physician Assistant Residency Program and the Best Neurology (Overall) Faculty Award from the Johns Hopkins Neurology Clerkship, reflecting his commitment to training future leaders in medicine and critical care.
Dr. Mathur earned his M.D. from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. During medical school, he completed a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He completed his Neurology residency and Neurocritical Care fellowship at Johns Hopkins.
